Diving: La Romana or Amber Cove?

Going next summer on an 8 day cruise.

 

Looking to go diving, and have days available in La Romana and AmberCove.  Cruise does not offer diving excursion for either of those locations, but i'm willing to do a non-cruise excursion.

 

Does anyone have any opinions about diving either of those?  Very good or very bad?

No direct experience, but I've heard that the south side of that island offers better diving. Keep us posted on your experiences there.
