Nancy3Lily Posted June 16, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 16, 2004 Is anyone else concerned about all of the information required for a Marriage License application? It seems like they are all very similar - but is all of that information necessary? What about "Identity Theft"? Paranoia? Thanks, Nancy
MandyGirl Posted June 17, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 17, 2004 We were concerned too when filling our the license application, but figured there was no way around it - "if you want to get married, you have to comply" was our thought. For a USVI license, we really had to put a lot on there, and any time I have to change my name somewhere else (to my new last name) and send a copy of the marriage license, I actually CUT OUT the really key pieces of information that are not needed (like mother's maiden name, his SS number, etc) and enclose a note to please contact me if they need that information for some reason in identifying me (none have contacted me and changed my name on those accounts anyway). Most places won't let me change my name by showing my new driver's license and new SS card - they want the actual marriage license. But yes, I do totally agree with you, these marriage licenses can totally set a person up for identity theft if they fall in the wrong hands. (And I also had figured I shouldn't be using my maiden name on anything anymore... hence my username change here on CC) ~ Mandy NCL Sky 12/2000 - Western Caribbean Celebrity Galaxy 12/2001 - Southern Caribbean S/S Norway 03/2003 wedding cruise - Eastern Caribbean ~~~~~ Married on the beach in St John! Nancy3Lily Posted June 19, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted June 19, 2004 Thanks Mandy. I feel better knowing that I am not the only one who wonders about that stuff. I thought there is a law somewhere in the U.S. that SS#'s are not to be requested anymore. Maybe it isn't a federal law, but it should be. On the other hand, how would they know who is who? Maybe a retna scanner? I'm not ready for that! Thanks, Nancy
MandyGirl Posted June 20, 2004 #4 Share Posted June 20, 2004 That... or fingerprints in a database!! But then it just takes one computer hacker to totally throw everything out of whack... I know our health insurance company quit printing SSN on our ID cards that we carry with us, so maybe the government will start taking identity theft seriously sometime soon! ~ Mandy
