KBS1607 Posted November 15, 2023 #1 Share Posted November 15, 2023 Royal has a $70 excursion to get us there. I’m not sure I’ll be up for much more than walking around.
Ms411 Posted November 17, 2023 #2 Share Posted November 17, 2023 Yes, you can get there on your own, but it may not be much cheaper. I'm not sure of the EXACT taxi fare because the Crown Bay to Red Hook fare isn't listed on the government's rate sheet. But it may be approximately $20 per person each way. The current ferry fare is $8.15 per person each way. Total $56.30 per person. You can hike to a beach (Honeymoon Beach on St John), or just walk around in the little town. The National Park has a nice headquarters building near the St John ferry dock so it's worth a stop if you want to learn a little about St John. Plenty of restaurants and shops at the dock. Camille pristash Posted January 3 #4 Share Posted January 3 This excursion is sold out on our sailing…any suggestions…did the taxi/red hook/taxi thing…kinda a hassle…any suggestions ?
Ms411 Posted January 3 #5 Share Posted January 3 There is a ferry that leaves from Crown Bay and one from the Charlotte Amalie Warerfront IN SEASON, but they have VERY limited schedules which might not work with ship schedule or give you much time on St John. They may not be as reliable either because the Red Hook ferry is first priority. The taxi/Red Hook/taxi is your best alternative if you want to go to St John. jeanandmark Posted January 5 #6 Share Posted January 5 Yes you can... rent a car on St Thomas (make sure the will allow you to go to St John), and take the car ferry out of Red Hook to St John. It's so worth it to have your own car! Depending on your time frame, I would suggest getting on the ferry back to St Thomas 2 hours before you need to. If you decide to do this, go to the National Park Visitor Center on St John and getting a map. Most things to see are one the north shore of the island. It's doable, but some planning is needed. But better yet, go back to St. John at a later date and stay a week. Biggest 2 decisions we had any week we were there is "Where should we eat" and "What beach should we go to today?" It's a slice of heaven!
Ms411 Posted January 5 #7 Share Posted January 5 The car barge isn't as reliable as the Red Hook people ferry. The barges leave when they fill up so you may have to wait for the next one. If one of the barges is down for repairs the wait can be long. Best to do car barge during a land visit.
