I cruised out of Galveston and the woman in charge of confiscation is a tough gal from Carnival named Piper.

I am airline personal and I am used to being honent and upfront about what I am carrying on my person during security checks so it was a shock to find the diet coke so "threatening" to Carnival. I had read on some site 6 cans were allowed and I assummed it was 6 per person, but as I was most STRONGLY informed it was 6 per CABIN!

I guess you must sneak the illegal soda contraband aboard hidden in checked luggage like a bolivian Mule.

Looks like packed luggage is the way to go for sodas. Has anyone had experience with bringing bottled water with them? My sister has severe allergies and must drink a certain amount of water each day and is concerned about the water on the cruise ship. We are sailing on the Sensation 8/16 out of Tampa.

We also packed our drinks in our luggage with no questions asked. I put about six cans of soda in a gallon sized zipper bag (just in case of leaks) and put it in my luggage. I did the same for each of my kids bags.My husband bagged up a few bottled waters for himself and put it into his bag. I also put baggies with drinks in them in my carry on and anything else I could think of. We had dozens of drinks and a small collapsible cooler to put them in when we got onto the ship. Our cabin steward also filled the cooler and iced it down every day when he came in to clean. Needless to say, he got a good tip. We have never had anyone complain about our drinks we brought on board. And yes, bottled waters are just as easy to take along.

We are going on the Elation out of Galveston in October. I gather that we need to pack soda's in our checked baggage and that we can also bring a soft side cooler on board. What about liquor? Can you "smuggle" it on board? Thanks... looking forward to "our" first cruise

Maria= when did you cruise?

A little while ago Carnival did away with their soft drinks to be allowed to be carried on. I wonder if you sailed during that time? Too many people with their rolling coolers and holding up lines since the coolers didnt fit into the x-ray machine. They had to empty the coolers and put each through individually. Carnival cruisers were not too happy about that and after a little bit they started to allow it again. (within reason)

I took a 12 pack of Diet 7UP with me. At the Xray Machine good ole Carnival would only let me take 6 cans on board. That is the new policy. If you want them hide them in checked baggage. Carnival must feel like they are loosing the big bucks on our soft drinks...

We always take 2 or 3 (12) packs packed in our luggage. Check it with your luggage and you should not have a problem.

Serene- I cruised this year spring break, Elation out of galveston.

The 6 per cabin rule- which if you have a quad gives you 1.44 cans a day to SHARE with 4 people on a 7 day cruise!!

Just imagine, getting your family of 4 - thirsty for Mountain Dew, huddled around the precious 1.44 can you are allowed per day! Put out the 4 glasses and start doling out your tiny daily portion of alloted brew!

Oops my math is off!

ITS WORSE THAN I THOUGHT!!!

6 cans on 7 days would only give you .88 of a can a DAY to SHARE with your family of four!

Like Survivor you can only have ONE SWALLOW each per day!!

This is the first time I am hearing this rule. Imagine the panic people will have when they can have the soda the cruise lines DONT carry. Pepsi is an addiction too. (LOL)

Although on my last cruise I carried on a 6 pack of bottles and gave 4 of them away on the last night.

6 cans per cabin is not a fair way to do it when you consider sometimes 4 people book that cabin. What happens when you go to another port and buy soda? What happens to the 3liter bottles if you carried that on?

Guess its back to putting it in your checked luggage.

Thank goodness there is a Wal-Mart in Purto Vallarta! I'll have to pack my hubby a 12 pack of Mt. Dew in our luggage that would only last him two day's at home until we get to PV! I won't want to be the employee who tried to take it away from him, he's an addict. icon_rolleyes.gif

Piper = Soda Nazi!

What a load of crap. You know, we spend thousands of dollars on these damn trips before we ever get on board. Then once we are on board, the cruiselines have perfected the art of taking even more money out of our pokets. To be hassled and treated like a common thug over bringing a few cans of soda on board is absolutely ludicrous!

I just got back from the Elation on 6-13. There were 3 of us in a cabin and we all took about a 12 pack each and just packed it in our suitcases and then drank them with ice. I think you are fine if you pack them in your suitcase. Some people tried to carry theirs on and some of it got taken away.

Also, you can smuggle on alcohol...if you are good. Put it in other containers, in your bags icon_smile.gif

Hope this helps.

Now just how are they tracking the 6 can rule? You embark with 6 cans, disembark, grab 6 more, and who is going to know? Surely they haven't paid a computer programmer to add a soda tracker to their software, so they can monitor soda smuggling. I can see us doing relays back and forth from the car just to get enough of dh's Code Red Mtn. Dew on board. If he were ever trapped on a ship with insufficient quantities of Mtn. Dew, I believe it would convince Carnival to suspend the soda confiscation immediately.

Here's what Carnival says:

Print this Page

Can I Bring Liquor On Board?

A liquor and beverage consumption policy was created in order for Carnival to be able to control the liquor consumption of minors and the quantities consumed that lead to the disruptive behavior of others on board.

Liquor and Beverage Policy

Bringing Alcohol On Board - Embarkation

Guests are prohibited from bringing alcoholic beverages on board.

One bottle of fine wine or champagne, per stateroom, may be brought on board during embarkation only. If the wine and/or champagne is brought to the Dining room for consumption, a $10 corkage fee per bottle will be charged to the guest; otherwise, the guest may only drink the wine and/or champagne in the privacy of a stateroom. The wine and/or champagne may NOT be brought into any other public lounge or area.

Guests may bring a small quantity of non-alcoholic beverages. Excessive quantities, to be determined at the discretion of security and/or the embarkation personnel, will be confiscated and retained by Carnival until the cruise is completed.

  • 2 weeks later...
I won't fret about the 6 can rule. We stop in 4 different ports, so I'm sure I can pick up a 6 pack in each one and be fine. I believe it is about the money loss and that's why they don't "allow" liquor smuggling at all... If they would just be more customer friendly and offer Coke, Pepsi, and Dr. Pepper, then alot less folks would have to sneak them in.

They probably have an exclusive contract with Coca Cola and get great deals.... I think that maybe the Gift Shop should consider selling the other brands personally...Carnival still gets a cut that way.

We have always packed a 12 pack of diet coke into our checked luggage and never had any problem getting it. That is our cup of coffee in the mornings. We've only ever sailed out of New Orleans. Also, we always go the same time every year and are celebrating a birthday and a wedding anniversary so we bring champagne and carry it on--no problem there either. We always have a bottle each but travel with another couple who bring 2 to 3 bottles each--never any problem.
