Packing to meet airlines Rules Question??

Questions for those of you that flew on Delta Airlines to your port city.

1. With the security now and the metal dectors can you or did you pack you clothes on wire/metal hangers. Like the ones you get at the cleaners with the stripe of foam on them?

2. Is it ok to put you nail clipper (not scissors) in your carry on to clip your plastic ties off your luggage once you get on the boat.

3. I understand that your large suitcase needs to be 62" including L+W+H and can only weight 50lbs. Can you check more than one? Like a large and medium?

Thanks

We fly Deta a lot. Yes we've packed wire hangers in our checked luggage and a clipper in our carryon, no problem....now. It was a problem on the nail clippers right after 911, not sure when they started letting these on.

Yes, you can take two bags without incurring an excess baggage charge.

Here's more on all that:

Since you were asking about luggage size I will also add that they ARE actively looking for and charging for bags over the fifty pound limit. I think their scales are accurate but we try to pack 45 pounds max on our scales at home.

A couple times I've had our luggage opened on the sidewalk in front of the airport while I try to redistribute weight to make it work. Not all that long ago a little extra tip when checking at the curb and they'd overlook the overage, not much anymore, they need it right or you pay.

I haven't flown to my port city yet but do fly for other reasons. The best source for information is the Delta web site baggage FAQ: https://www.delta.com/travel/plan/baggage_info/faqs/index.jsp

You should have no problem packing the wire or metal hangers in your checked baggage. You may have problems if you try to take them in your carry-on luggage.

You should be able to take a nail clipper in your carry on IF it does not have a file on it. Be sure it's a cheap pair that you won't mind leaving behind if anyone gives you flack -- it's not worth arguing with security personnel to prove a point and take a chance on missing your flight if they decide that you can't take them for whatever reason. But I just put the nail clipper or a small pair of scissors in the outside pocket of my checked luggage. It's always been there when I got to my destination. Worse case, you'll have to borrow something from someone else to clip the ties with.

Each piece of checked luggage can weigh no more than 50 lbs according to Delta's web site and you have the correct dimensions. You are normally allowed a total of three pieces so you can have one carry on plub two checked pieces of luggage.

the nail file thing is no longer an issue. Somebody finally realized that you would be hard pressed to take down a plane with it. Besides, they already KNOW people can get much more dangerous items thourgh the silly security, but just do not want to admit it.

Metal hangers in carry on should be fine. People do it all the time. You should see my roll on bag and briefcase. Computer, extra battery packs (that look alot like bad stuff), wires, cables, cameras, mouse, dvds, adaptaers, phones, extension cord...etc. Yikes.

Thanks so much. My DH was worried that my luggage or I would be stopped and search because the metal hanger set the scanners off going through.

thanks,

The TSA stands for Thousands Standing Around. You can get much more info at www.flyertalk.com

There are security areas, and areas for each airline. There are some kind of TSA friendly locks that only the TSA can open which means your suitcases stay locked.

Personally, we have been all OVER the world and travel intl 2+ times a year and have NEVER locked our suitcases. So the latest crapola from the TSA to leave your suitcases unlocked does not bother us. The fact that their dance is not making us safer at the cost of billion$$ does though.
