Does it matter if id says different name then

My motherlaw is going on a cruise and her name on the birth cert. is written one way and all of her id's have it a differnt way.

She goes by her middle name and uses her first name as her middle name on all of her id's.

Does that make any sense?

Will they give her a hard time about this?

I know she will not be getting a pass port she wants to use her birth cert.

Put yourself in the shoes of the immigration officials. For identification purposes, if someone hands you a birth certificate with the name Jane Jean Doe on it and and ID that says Jean Jane Doe, would you accept it?

 

Personally, I wouldn't take any chances. $25 or whatever the charge is in my state to get the name corrected on my DL would be well worth it.

I'm With KJ. Her legal name is the one on her birth certificate...her ID's should match that. Spend the $20 to get a new license, make sure the cruise docs match that name and go have fun!!

But then again, she might get turned away at the port and lose all the money she has paid for the cruise. Is it worth the chance?

Forget the money - can you imagine how heartbroken she would be if she wasn't allowed to board?

My mother went by her middle name as well. Hated her first name so only used it as an initial. We were told that she WOULD NOT be allowed on the ship if her Birth Certificate and ID did not match (names reversed). We got her a state issued ID (free for Seniors) to match her Birth Certificate for the cruise.

 

I did show them at check in her "old" ID with her middle name first and asked if we could have used it, after showing the one that matched her Birth Certificate. We were told that she WOULD HAVE been denied boarding if we had tried to use the old one because it didn't match.

Kelly, I did not take your post as being harsh.

I understand what you were saying. Don't worry about it.

Now i find out last night she has no birth cert. only a cert. from the hospital and it has no name on it only her last name, i guess her mom and dad could not agree on a name.

So now she has to call the state of MN. and check into getting a birth cert.

And i don't even know if they have a name for her.

I booked the cruise for dec. so she has a little time to get this taken care of, but i told her she needs to get on it right away.

 

Does she need a birth cert. for a passport?

Maybe she will just have to get one.

She will need a birth certificate for a passport. Did your mom marry? she would have needed a birth crtificate for that. How about a social securit card- needed on for that too. If she isnt sailing until Dec you still have time left. Dont wait too long as sometimes it may take 6 weeks to get the birth certificate.

So i guess she better get a state Birth Cert. I think i will go to the web site and print out the form she needs to apply for a copy and give that to her to do. That way maybe it will get done faster.

yes, she did get married.

She does not know what her s.s. cards says on it.

When she got married they must have accepted the hospital copy she has. But she said it did not have a name on it, so i don't know.

tnf, like most others the advise they gave is right on. Don't take the chance with doc's that have conflicting names.

 

Talk to the customs folks and the Carnival people and get what they need. A great cruise can look awfully bad as you watch the ship sail with you on the dock!
