Taormina questions

We are scheduled to dock (or tender) from Giardini Naxos. We have been told the port area itself isn't the nicest area. We plan on doing Taormina on our own. What is the best way to get into town from our port?. Also any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

It's been a few years since I was there but I don't remember anything unpleasant about the port area at Giardini Naxos.

The "best" way up to Taormina depends on what is important to you.  For ease and convenience you could arrange a car service, but this is also the most expensive way.

At the other end of the cost continuum is the public bus, either Etna Trasporti or Interbus (I think they have joined forces but still have separate web sites).

Etnatrasporti - Viaggi in autobus in Sicilia

Interbus - Viaggi in autobus in Sicilia

The bus stop closest to the port is called Giardini Naxos Dalmazia, located on Via Consolare Valeria, about 1 km/six-tenths of a mile from the port on foot.  There is a kiosk at the stop where you can buy your tickets.

The bus drops you at the Taormina bus station, which is a short walk (about 500 meters/one-third of a mile) from Porta Messina, the northern end of the shopping/restaurant district of Taormina.

The fare is 1,90 euro each way.  The buses come about every 15-20 minutes in the morning so you won't wait long.

Ggiardini Naxos is a beach resort and there should also be taxis at the port to take you up to Taormina

There have been a number of past threads which you might find additional info/suggestions.

If you have not already used the search tool to find them, choose from these

Two years ago we took the Bus up to Taormina and the Taxi on the way back to the tender port. The cab was about 20 euros.

the first thing we did in the morning in Taormina was to visit the theater. Later there were large queues. Pleas don’t forget to try the famous cannoli and the granita ice(cream - or actually sorbet). It’s wonderful refreshing.
