Memories of the TSS Caribia

Hello Folks,

 

I'm hoping that I won't get told off for posting this message.:o

 

Having read the by-line for this forum, especially the bit that

says... "that bring back those wonderful memories", I'm

actually looking to try and contact people for information that's

sadly at the very opposite end of that scale.

 

When I first started recording the history of the 'Green Goddess'

RMS Caronia, it was never my intention to cover her final years

after Cunard ownership. However, perhaps inevitably, I have now

gleaned sufficient information to expand the story of TSS Caribia,

from one "borrowed" text page to a full section of 9 pages.

 

As with the rest of the Timeline, my aim is to do proper justice

to the topic by being able to gather together 1st-hand reports

from people who were there! Within this new Caribia section, I

remark that probably no-one would now readily admit to having

taken one of the dreadful or catastrophic cruises on what was

touted as a "Caronia rebirth!" at that time (1969)

 

So, dear reader, were you ever on one the 2 Universal Cruise Line

Caribbean Cruises aboard Caribia in early 1969? Even if you are

reluctant to admit this publicly, I would still dearly like to hear from

you. Of course, I will respect your anonimity if that is your wish!

 

Although I'm loath to bring back possibly horrific experiences for

anyone, my aim is to be able to record for posterity as complete

a story as I can. Rather than rely upon 2nd or 3rd hand reports,

it would be good to know just how UCL's brochure was received,

what the expectations were, any events leading up to the cruise,

and of course, the experience aboard.

 

As I have said, I can fully understand any reluctance to re-visit

this topic. If you want to see what has been currently recorded,

can I invite you to take a look?

WOW! What an incredible site!

 

I remember watching one of Caribia's few departures from New York. The smoke and soot pouring from the stack didn't exactly provide the best publicity shot. And between her layups in both Brooklyn and Manhattan, I thought she would be a fixture forever.

Unfortunately, no.

 

Most views of Caribia/Caronia happened while driving along the West Side Highway or the Gowanus Expressway. Not a good opportunity to take pictures.

 

I had a bunch of pictures from ships I visited in New York prior to departures, as well as a series from my very first cruise (SS U.S.), but they seemed to have been lost in family moves.
