Where will Freedom be docked for the Christening?

but I am wondering too. I am assuming when they say New York, they actually MEAN New York. I am betting on Pier 86 near the Intrepid; it would make sense since that's a very high-profile spot. The pier in Red Hook belongs to Cunard/Carnival so I don't think it would be there.

If they were doing it in RCCL's port in Bayonne, I think they'd say NJ instead of NY. As we get closer to May 12th we'll find out more.

I am hoping for Pier 86 since it would be easily visible from Weehawken for me.

If it is Pier 86 I am there. I will take the day off and take some pics. Can't wait.

That would make sense to me. Isn't that where the Adventure was christened? I seem to remember the Adventure was the first ship of any kind allowed to dock there just after 9/11? I'm pretty sure I am right but I may be wrong. Anyone else?

If the Freedom is docked in NY for the ceremony, how would that work for the guests onboard from the night before? Would the ship take the gusts back to Cape Liberty after the ceremony, so they can go back home in their cars?

Matt,

To date, you seem to be the only one with knowledge of something happening on May 11th (regarding some sort of pre-inaugural activity). Have you gotten confirmation on this?

New York Harbor naming for Freedom

11/4/2006

Freedom of the Seas will sail into New York Harbor on May 12 where the ship’s naming ceremony will be broadcast to millions of NBC’s ‘Today’ show viewers.

The 158,000gt vessel will sail in from Cape Liberty in Bayonne, N.J., for the naming by godmother Louise Calder, a foster mother to hundreds who was selected in a ‘Today’ contest.

On board the same morning – but not as part of the official naming ceremony – singer Barry Manilow will kick off ‘Today’s’ Summer Concert Series. President Adam Goldstein said Royal Caribbean International is thrilled to introduce Freedom of the Seas to ‘Today’ viewers, adding that it is ‘equally exciting to host world-renowned superstar and icon Barry Manilow on board for a live performance.’

Freedom sails out for sea trials

14/4/2006

Freedom of the Seas left Aker Finnyards in Turku yesterday, escorted by two icebreakers and three tugs until reaching ice-free waters. ‘Everything went well and we are very satisfied,’ said Harri Kulovaara, evp maritime, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.

The 158,000gt ship will undergo sea trials before heading into drydock in Hamburg for a routine final hull check, followed by further sea trials prior to the April 24 delivery to Royal Caribbean in Hamburg. Freedom of the Seas is scheduled for inaugural activities in Hamburg, Oslo, Southampton, Cape Liberty in Bayonne, N.J., and Miami. The naming is set for New York Harbor on May 12, and revenue service from Miami begins on June 4.

Thanks everyone!!!

Hey Tom I drove by Clifton this past weekend on my way to PA. It took me nearly 4 hours to get home with all of the traffic.
