Debating on Halifax cruise

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if most of you think the Halifax/Canada/New England tour is worth it or do you feel you could have driven there in the car easier? In other words, is it worth a cruise to these spots?

You could fly into Halifax and rent a car. Canada is not like the Carribbean where you can jump on and off the ship to shop and look around. Almost anything worthwhile in the Maritimes is worth a day trip. Halifax has several museums, the Citital and a beautiful park. You can go from there to spend at least a half day at Peggy's Cove. There are car tours you can take around the Island to see places such as the Historic Lunenburg restoration and along the north coast "Evangeline Trail" to see the Bay of Fundy's extremely high and low tides and the Acadian towns and churches. Some ships stop in St. John's but you can't really see the Fundy tides at table rocks without investing a day. You can also drive over the Confederation brdige to Prince Edward Island, which is worth a few days. In other words, there is nothing that we see on a cruise itinerary that we would not have seen much better by not having more than five or six hours.

A cruise will cost you less than driving to all these ports. Also, driving gets tiring. If you opt for driving, you have to go for several weeks to enjoy that many ports, or choose only 2 (maybe 3 cities) for a one week stay.

It is more expensive than the Carribe(mostly)...its a shorter season with a limited number of ships. We went 4 years ago involuntarily--we went left instead of right(to Bermuda)...we had a lovely time. I loved Halifax and Bar Harbor. Saint John's I found interesting but blah...Halifax was unexpectedly very interesting. Peggy's Cove, The Halifax museum...the Park..the Titanic cementary...unexpected and very interesting...

IMHO the ports on the Canada/New England run are wonderful! Halifax is a lovely city with so much to do without a rental car or a planned tour and all the cities have much to offer including wonderful seafood for lunch ashore! It is more expensive than Caribbbean but IMHO worth it.. will def. do this itinerary again.
