Smoking on board...

LOL!
Sally May,
You must be new here.
If you think this is a boxing match, you should have been on these boards 2 months ago.
I happen to think this thread is going very nicely...no one has called anyone else a name, and it really isn't a battle at all, just sharing of opinions.
We started something new on the boards a while back when things got heated....someone always calls for Jell-O Shots when the subject matter gets hot...so unless you see a call for jell-O shots, then things must be pretty civil!!

Sally May - this thread is a great example of how smokers and non-smokers can actually agree and get along! There has been no name-calling, but rather, respect and consideration for both sides of the issue. This is one of the FEW threads where "Jell-0 shots" have not been offered. I really think that we have been civil and respectful of each other, and recognize each other's concerns. I think that Cotton and halos have been considerate in their posts, and hope I have been, too. I hope this thread remains civil, and you are welcome to join us! I'll be the first to offer Cotton one of my Winstons, and will also be the first to buy halos a couple of Miami Vices! Thanks, all!

Lime, lemon, strawberry, cherry, or grape, halos?? My PCD is months old, so I had to throw in a few land-based vacations in between! (All-inclusives in Mexico - love it!) I still think that this thread about smoking is the best and most civilized thus far, and I hope it continues. My next cruise isn't until 9/05, but I'm thinking about booking a couple until then. Forgive me for for by-passing the Glory...looking at the Conquest, though! And the Zuiderdam again (sorry - wrong board).

SallyMay, you are very correct. But this is a problem almost similar to religion. Belief AND habit many times dictate actions. Your post is the answer but it is not reall heard. There are too many things that influence this debate.
Buttttt on the bright side I used to sail & frequent HAL boards and this thread would be burning down building by now.:D
And to those that do not consider religion life threatening I will leave now............;) ;)

Yes - I like HAL. Always have. I think (for me) it's one of the best lines! I've had wonderful cruises on HAL, but have also had great cruises on Carnival, NCL, RCI, Celebrity, etc. HAL just suits my tastes. My 9/17/05 cruise is on the Caribbean Princess, doing the Eastern. It's a CC group cruise, and the first I've done. It's been....an "experience"! PammyHound is great, but I've had a bit of a problem with the Princess Board regulars. There are some who are more interested in racking up posts than giving out information! I would encourage you to try different cruise lines, halos, and would also invite you to join us "Hounds" on the 9/17/05 Caribbean Princess! Check out the CC Group Cruises Board. I have no vested interest in this, and probably have no right to advertise this. Sorry if I've broken any CC guidelines.

Actually Dan...you've been around long enough to know that a few months ago this thread would be buring down the house on these boards as well!!!!!
Where did all the 'fighters' go???
It's too quiet around here!!

Ohhh,
imsulin, there is nothing better I'd like than to join you on that cruise, but I'd need to hit the lottery first!!
I will try other cruise lines (I think....the next just may be Princess...I have more investigating to do!!) Please give us a full review of your Princess cruise on these boards when you get back!!!

halos I never have been on the Carnival boards until I decieded to take my daughters on the Ecstasy. I was inormed that they flamed all HAL cruisers at that time so I never looked. But if that is/was the case I am very happy to see a great thread and very little anger.:D :D

I will still state that this thread is one of the most civil and respectful threads on CC regarding the smoking issue. There has been no name-calling or off-board retaliation efforts. Please - let's keep it this way! I'm off now to light up (on my back patio, with a Bailey's & Cream). Thanks to all posters who have kept this thread civil and respectful!

Must have you confused with another Dan!!
Welcome to the Carnival boards Dan!!! hang in there, things get hot here sometimes too. Doesn't matter what line you sail...people have strong opinions.
We have a few hot topics that I'm thinking are most likely hot on other boards too...They are:
Smoking
Jeans in the dining room (although this most likely isn't an issue on HAL)
Irons and candles (that was a real hot topic..lietrally and figuartively!!!)
KIDS...now that is a touchy subject (that most likely isn't an issue on HAL
either!!)
I'm sure there may be a few more I've forgotten, but they are the most common argument starters!!

Hi, CruisinDan! I'm a HAL cruiser and also a smoker! I wasn't around when the HAL/Carnival cross-flaming was going on, and I'm very glad to see that this isn't the case now. I hope. You haven't offended anyone, Dan, and I, for one, appreciate your posts, as well as all of those on this thread. Have you sailed on the Ectasy yet? I've been on Carnival a few times, and enjoyed those cruises. Thanks for your posts!

halos - this Princess cruise is only a $100.00 pp deposit next week. (Cotton - are you here?) Sorry - don't mean to advertise, but it's a really good deal. In the interim. I'm looking at booking the 4/9/05 Zuiderdam Eastern, or the 4/10/05 Conquest Western.

To all: It's just SO NICE to have a thread where we can all respect each other's opinions!

Aaahhhh........it's almost here! I am really close!!
The first cruise after she goes will be the Panama Canal. My DH and I have already started planning this!! The poor kid! We'll be like, "Don't let the door hit you on the *ss on your way out!"

LOL!
I have great kids, I shouldn't be acting like I want to be rid of them...but, man, do I have PLANS!!!!

Hey, halos! As of 6/96, I became an empty-nester (kid#5 went to college, and actually graduated!). Listen - it's greater than it's cracked up to be! Our door hit every one of their a**** on the way out, but was always open for their return! (As long as they brought lobster, clean clothes, a separate bank account, and a car in their name.) They all celebrated this past Christmas with us, and actually bought and wrapped their own presents to us and each other! Then, they all flew to their respective homes and jobs! Now - that's what I call parental success! Sigh. Being the schmook Mama that I am, though, I'm planning (and paying for) all of us to meet up at an A/I in Cancun next June. Just hope that there won't be any grandkids tagging along, though. I pride myself on not having any!

Come on back, Dan! We want to hear from you!

Hey again, y'all! I'm back and full as a tick from eating too many bbq'd ribs, and then having a little nappette!

Thx for the kind words, Imsulin.

Halos ~ the regular Dan is "Dan40". He's probably still in the backyard cookin' burgers.:D

CruisinDan~ I think I welcomed you last week - if not, WELCOME!

Sally May~ about the ONLY thread I steer clear of is 'dining room attire'. No way will I ever even read, much less post to, one of those again. Uh-uh. I really don't like controversial posts. This one is just... er, helpful, I think, more informative.

I hope everybody's had a fun and safe fourth!

Hi there, Cotton! Don't them kind words just make ya want to cut off yer mullett and wear Harley shirts with sleeves? Lissen - I ordered a slab-o-ribs from them good sidewalk folks at Winn Dixie, and made a gallon of corn salad for the old widder ladies here in my complex. Bless their hearts - they gummed that stuff down without complaining or choking, and didn't drown in our pool!

Great thread, and thanks to all who have posted here! And, I will echo Cotton's wishes for a fun and SAFE July 4th!

.....I'd like to avoid having to be a prisoner in my own cabin, and to have more of a choice of where to sit on deck. QUOTE]

Hmmm, I wasn't going to get into this discussion, but...... On the Lido Deck on ALL Carnival ships, there is a smoking side and a non-smoking side. Signs are posted, and ashtrays are evident on the smoking side.

A little story:
On my last cruise, I was smoking (yep, on the smoking side at the pool area, but 'way up against the windbreaker), and a lady sat down at the next table. She started making all these exaggerated coughing noises and said, rather loudly to her companion, "I don't know WHY people have to smoke here." I didn't even look at her, continued looking out at sea.

She went on and on about it for about 5 minutes, and I FINALLY (very politely) told her that I was in the smoking area, and that she had chosen to sit down next to ME, although there were several other empty tables. She asked me if I was going to put my cig out, and I told her (again nicely) no, and smiling as sweetly as I could, I said that she might be more comfortable in the non-smoking area.

She got up in a huff, loudly proclaiming to everybody around that "You'd better not sit over here.......there's smoke everywhere!" (This was, of course, outside in an open area, with the smoke going up into the air.)

Geez.

There are going to be smokers on every cruise, on every line that I know of. Most of us are considerate smokers, and wouldn't even consider lighting up in areas other than those designated as smoking.
I know what you mean Cotton.
Also, I keep reading about people saying that they liked the Paradise but it didn't go to many ports. That was probably because it didn't get enough passengers to go to the ports it DID go to.

A lot of people also don't realize that the cruiselines make MOST of their revenue from the European market and the Europeans are heavy smokers and they spend big dollars on their cruises.

Money talks.;)

That's cuz I eat at the local Awful House! Them grits 'n swate tay have addled my Yankee brain to the point of almost (I said ALMOST) driving to Montgomery (Mungumry) to fly into Biloxi (Bluxi) to stay at my favorite Mississississississippipipippippi place...the Beau Rivage. Howsumever, I prefer to fly out of Hotlanter. When I'm a redneck, I stay at the B.R., and swipe the shrimp and other seafood goodies out of the highroller lounges. When I'm a Yankee, I stay at the Casino Magic for cheap and drink a lot. I'm a Natchez-Under-the-Hill kind of Yankee! We won the war, but I DO appreciate the Missississississippiippippians - since I live right next door in Abalama..Amalaba..Malabama...Bamalama...whatever the 4th lowest state in education is! Some of my best friends are Missississississipipipipiians!
