Deposit for onboard expenses?

I was thinking along the lines of $500-$600. The NCL website says you can establish your account with cash or traveler's check but a deposit is required.

Of course they don't say what it is.

They probably don't post a specific deposit amount since it may vary depending on the length of the cruise.

They ask me for a credit Card every year. I always tell them that I am setting up a cash account. In NYC, they send you to a desk at the end of check-in to set-up this account. I believe minimum is $500. Then, I check every few days as to the status of our account and add to it when necassary in $250 increments. I feel it gives ME more control over the account. I don't want any extra charges on my CC. However, without a CC on file with them, you cannot get chips in the casino. So, cash accounts don't work if you want to gamble.

I posted this in another thread....but another great option to consider to AVOID any problem or holds on a credit card is to get an American Express Travel Card. It which works just like travelers checks, but is accepted just like a credit card at almost any location. We are planning two of these....one for on the ship, and then one for our land stay :D

And NO, I don't work for AMEX.....but maybe I should start asking for a commission LOL !!!

Logcabin,

A little extra control is my reasoning as well. I know myself and I don't want to go overboard $$$ so to speak. I feel like I'll be doing that off the ship! LOL

The good thing is there is no casino on this ship and I'm not much of a drinker. I just have to stay away from the spa. :D

Except you can not use it onboard  Check the fine print at the Amex site. Time for a new plan:)

Since Travelers Cheque Cards are prepaid cards, they are not intended for use in certain industries. You are NOT permitted to use the Travelers Cheque Card: To pay for on-board cruise charges.

Aren't you glad you did not leave home with it :D

UGHHHHH, well I guess we'll just have to do cash deposit then........I don't expect to charge alot on board, especially since every day is a PORT day. I guess 500-600 bucks for the two of us. But we've got 2pre-4post days in Oahu, plus all the cruise ports. I intend to leave home with ONE checked bag, but come home with TWO !!! :p

Cash will work fine - no need to go out and get Travelers Checks. (seems like an extra hassle to me). Not sure why people have problems carrying 5 or 6 hundred dollar bills around, or even a dozen or so?

If you are one of those folks that prefer to use a DEBIT card, do a search to read some long discussions about using them, and some related problems.

Credit cards work REALLY good.
