:) Greenock is an industrial port nothing to see and is quite far from Glasgow and Edinburgh. Driving in Scotland with manual transmissons , the steering wheel on the right side of the car, the price of gas at over a euro per litre and lots of roundabouts.I would consider doing an excursion from the ship even if was and "on your own tour" that would just get you transportation and some sightseeing it would be well worth it.

also, if you were interested in glasgow, there is excellent and frequent train service between the two. I agree with the previous poster about driving unless you are confident and comfortable with manual shift right hand drive cars.

Hiring a automatic transmission car would be no problem, just a little more expensive.

We rented a car from Arnold Clark, they picked us up at the port and took us to their location, at the end of the day we parked the car in a secured area at the port and gave the keys to a security guard. It could not have been easier. We went to Luss on Loch Lomond and then to Stirling Castle. It was one of our very favorite days.
