Another Santorini question

Recommended Posts

I have a question about clothing attire for Santorini only.

I already know how most everyone feels about denim and I already know how most feel about shorts... Im almost afraid to ask but would it be Ok to wear a nice cute pair of denim shorts in Santorini ? From what I think I understand Santorini is a little more casual than some of the other med ports, is this correct ?

Thanks

Jodee

First, yes of course it would be OK to wear denim shorts in Santorini. Bear in mind that it can get very hot on Santorini, however. We were there just a month ago and a lot of women were wearing floaty cotton skirts.

As regards the casualness, I would have thought that Santorini was typical of the Aegean Sea ports (eg, Mykonos; Rhodes; etc). Mykonos especially is very relaxed, because there are a number of good beaches there and many people dress for a mixed beach/town day. But Santorini is indeed very relaxed.

(Actually, as regards the heat on Sanrorini we had an unexpected experience - we got quite cold at lunch! Dressed in very light clothes and short-sleeves, we were eating in a shaded open restaurant overlooking the caldera, and the breeze was blowing. After an hour or so (it was a pretty leisurely lunch!) we felt quite chilled - we certainly had 'goose bumps' up our arms. Then when we finished we walked back through the restaurant and out into the street which was out of the breeze and in full sunlight, and we quickly got very hot indeed!)

At the risk of starting a clothes controversy...by all means wear your shorts or almost anything else on Santorini. The same goes for anywhere in Greece (including Athens) or almost any other country in the Med. Last month my wife and I were sipping some whine at the Piazzo Narvona (Rome) on a gorgeous day (we were wearing jeans). Most of the Italians were comfy in their jeans or comfy loose fitting clothes and very comfy sneakers or sandels. As we sat in our outdoor cafe we watched the American and Brit tour groups go by with folks trying not to look like tourists. It has always fascinated me how folks try to not look like tourists as they walk around with a large group following someone carrying a flag (smile). My suggestion is that you just dress for the weather.....and yes, shorts are very appropriate anywhere in the Med. The only exception is when visiting churches in Italy or visiting the casino in Monte Carlo (why would anyone dress up and pay an admission fee to go into a casino?).
