Husband Downsized at Work - Insurance ?

Almost 30 years ago, the time frame of the poster, probably put it in the middle of the Carter mis-administration, when we enjoyed 15% inflation, and nearly 30% unemployment in many areas of this country. Remember him? He's the one whos only answer to the problems the Democrats got us into was that we just needed to tighten our belts and make do with less.

Thank goodness he and his kind aren't in power. He did have a nice smile, and he seems to have fun building houses with donated money now, though.

Do you think our trip insurance would cover this? It happened just this week so I hadn't had a chance to look into it. Has anyone had any experience with this?

I paid for our cruise in full one night the next night he lost his job - UGH!!

We are still planning on going on the cruise, but who knows....

I certainly feel for you. I lost my job about a year and a half ago. It was a total shock, but it wasn't the end to life or cruising. My wife and I wondered if we would ever cruise again and we did. Went on Mariner of the Seas in March and we are planning on a 5 day in September on Fantasy. I am near retirement age anyway and I am drawing a SS disability check and my wife is still working. Good luck to you.

Won't rise to the bait. Just read the history books. The words I used may not be an exact quote, but Mr. Carter actually got on national TV and made that statement. I lived through it with a just-starting family too. Scarey is a bit of an understatement of those years.

Ow to the OP and to the other couple facing a layoff ..((( hang in there )))

If you have so much already paid for, hotel/air etc...and do decide to take the cruise, I like the idea of making a game to see how little you can spend other than the required tip amounts....:)

There are some other threads/boards with ideas and here are a few:

why not make a game of it to see how "little' you can spend !!!

No need for the "specialty" restaurant, formal pictures, spa, casino etc,

cut down on shore excursions, just walk around, go to nearby beach,

or share a cab etc, sometimes cheap tour at pier too

bring on your own soda/water,

bring your own wine on board (and shhhh...check out the sneak on booze in water bottles...who would blame ya?) <grin>

whatever clothes you had for your last cruise, wear those, no need to buy anything new, you probably have suit/dress etc, sometimes a lot of us spend a lot "preparing" for a cruise but no need to, good place to cut down on $$

If you are staying in Florida night before cruise, check around hotel lobby etc for the "freebie papers"...many 2 for 1 coupons, deals, even discounts at sub shops and things, if you are in Miami a nice "cuban sandwich" from the cuban place at Bayside Mall will be a LOT cheaper than Bubba Gumps...again, look for coupons

Maybe get takeout, bring back to hotel room, make your own drink, avoiding drink/tips etc and things that mount up when you eat in a restaurant?

Souveniers?? Take your own pictures, buy some postcards or fridge magnet at each port...pick up any "deals/freebie/coupons" papers at the ports too,

make it a "scavenger hunt" to get the little funny goodies that they offer

Take advantage of the "free" drinks onboard: champage at the art auctions,

drinks at captains party and at the past guest party, as some have said go to the bar and order what you want, enjoy!

On Imagination our waiter gave us each a beautiful "print" of the ship the final night...nice! That was a neat surprize, not sure if all carnival ships do that but if so, that is a great memento right there, no need to buy a bunch of stuff at the gift shops!

It sounds like you all have a great attitude and I am sure good things will come your way, you will return all happy and relaxed!

I know that my travel insurance covers loss of my job.

Sorry to hear the bad news. Best of luck to you and your DH.

Shelly, I'd be really interested in what insurance you have. That's really, really unusual. What company is it? Almost all insurance companies disallow "change in financial circumstances."

Since you asked, the economy is strong as ever. Unemployment at one of its lowest levels . Daddy Bush got in a mess cause he raised taxes(like a democrat), his son knows better.;) Have a great cruise . Remember a great day at work is the same as a great day on a cruise.:D

My policy from M.H. Ross Global Alert! Enhanced includes the following:
