QE2 28th July One night cruise

Hi all,

Just received a letter to today from Cunard line regarding the above one nighter cruise,

They are advising that the dress code for the evening will be FORMAL !!!

This must be a first and goes against all that we are ever told, However it will be nice to have everybody dressed to the same standard.

I know its only a quick voyage, but anybody thought about a quick get together,if only so we might put a face to the names?

Im sure it goes with out saying that we will all have a most enjoyable evening and it will be great to see the old gal again!!!!

Well I suppose it would add greatly to the party atmosphere. I've always wondered how many would "go formal" anyway on a 1 or 2 nighter on QE2. As these short trips tend to attract new passengers, getting a chance or a "taster" to travel at what seems a very good price, and so, regardless of the sailing time, would wish to make a very special occasion of the time aboard. But I suppose there would also be those who stick to "first night/last night" tradition and dress casually. And those who wouldn't think about "dressing" for dinner unless told to.

Who has been on a 1 or 2 nighter and has had experience of the numbers who dress "formal" regardless?

I'd been intending to go "informal" on the basis that the rules state informal. (First/last night and all that)

I'm astonished that we have been told today. How many people who are doing this for the first time will have a dress suit? Remember that the cheapest rate I've seen in the UK is £49.99 - about a quarter of a cheap dress suit.

Myself? I'm quite pleased, as this will allow me to wear the beautiful shirt studs my wife bought me for my 40th birthday. But then, as a regular, it's simply a question of packing something different. (Having said that my regular suit travels better than my dress suit!)

It'll be nice however - can't wait to see her again. But as we have two mother in laws with us, together with a grandmother, I can't see that we'll have a chance to socialise with anyone else.

Apparently the QG will be very very full - at least according to Dennis. He says these trips always sell more triple occupancy. However he has promised us a table for 5, so we're okay.

Looking forward to seeing the faces of my mother in law and grandmother in law as the whistle sounds leaving Southampton! We can actually feel it shake part of the cabin where we are!

Further thoughts......

This is a surprise for the mother, mother in law and grandmother in law. The latter two are with us now, with what they have brought for the evening, which we took to be informal because (a) that is the Cunard tradition and (b) that was the suggestion that we had been given, based on a information from staff a few weeks ago.

So my wife and I have decided to be informal. Otherwise I'm in danger of making our three relatives feel awkward. Had we known in advance, then we could have told them that I will be wearing a dress suit, and to dress accordingly. But it's too late for that now.

How many people are now sitting at home thinking that they must - tomorrow - buy a dress suit?

Having had time to reflect, I think that this is really a bad decision on the part of Cunard. Not so much the formal in it's own right, but simply the fact that they post letters to reach us 48 hours before sailing.

I remember well the first night (and I was alone) that I went to the Queens Grill, and how I worried about clothes. I think that there could be a lot of worried people, thinking that a suit isn't "good enough".

Perhaps I can provide a little solidarity in that respect at least. I'm not worried myself because I am confident enough to deal with it, and enough of a regular to be able to carry it off.

Needless to say, all references to "dress suit" apply equally to the female version of formal/informal.

When you're my shape you don't!

Slaters have the best value and quality dinner suits (in guiness book of records, biggest retailer of mens suits in the world) you would get a lovely one for £89, they start at £69, just looked at there site, closest to you is Birmingham, Nottingham or Worcester. ps I don't work for them they are just really good and stock every size that is made, my sister got DJ's for her five boys from age 13 and her husband got one too at the opposite end of the size spectrum, the ones for the boys were £35!!

Hope that helps

£100, £79, £69, £35, Any advance on £35?:D

You made me laugh again, cheeky monkey, I was only trying to be heplful, but realistically most of what we get chatting about on here is quite mundane I suppose, why do we do it? I do have a life! REALLY I DO!

(I'm still tittering occassionally about your blackpool pleasure beach remark, that was fab!)

Who? Me? What did I do?

I was only trying to be helpful

I don't doubt it, I was/am just being flippant:D

The QE2 - mundane! How dare you?

Good for you - I hope that you enjoy it. Don't use it too much or you'll wear it out. I've had to go into work for a couple of hours this afternoon - so irritating for it to interrupt my day in the sun:)

Kindlychap,

As Andrew Nelder was the MD of the PG Rest I guess David Chambers is no longer with Cunard? I found him to be excellent and he always made sure I had a very good table in the QG Rest.

Dennis is very good too and I think has been with Cunard for a long time & even features on the Alan Whicker 1982 World Cruise Documentary in the Columbia Rest back then.

Kind Regards,

Thanks for the thought. I had mine made by Mr. Daswani of Raja fashions, it fits perfectly and I am very pleased with it. I'd certainly recommend him if you want a nice (and quick - mine was inside a fortnight!) suit without Saville Row prices.

I do find off the peg difficult, however posh the peg!

Hi Cunard Queen

Did you have a good time?

Did you bump into Annette & Family, going on as you were coming off?

We thought about doing it last minute but it was full, then when I woke up at 1.00pm on Saturday with a hangover I thought "Thank God we didn't do it, it would have all been over now and I'd be sat in the car driving back up to Manchester-ford" anyway you had a lot further to go, I hope you enjoyed it and were able to pad out the trip with something (or someone) else to make it all worth while?

Mark
