Preds Posted July 27, 2006 #1 Share Posted July 27, 2006 Anyone know if the use of 2 way radios on ships is allowed? If so, do they generally work on board, or is there too much interference? Just wondering if we'll be able to give our kids our 2 way radios to keep in contact with them while on board. Normally we'd use cell phones, but A), I'm not certain the cell phones will work on board, and B) I shudder to think of the per minute cost. We're cruising on 8/13 on the Spirit, so if anyone has an answer to any of the above that'd be great! Thanks.
melika091900 Posted July 27, 2006 #2 Share Posted July 27, 2006 We had them on our cruise... and there was a lot of interference.. especially in mexico.. but they did work sometimes, it depends on the brand.. ive heard motorola's are good for that. but we did use them , and alot of other people on the ship were also and we heard a lot of their converstations ... thats the only bad thing... hopefully you'll find some that are really good.. i think they are worth getting to at least try.. good luck. melissa
MidtheNight Posted July 27, 2006 #3 Share Posted July 27, 2006 If you get walkie talkies and you want to make sure that they work get good ones! The cheap ones do not work especially well on the ship and you will get a lot of chatter from other people. Look for range (this equates to the power the unit has), look for something with 13+ channels PLUS privacy channels (you'll end up with about 300 different channels then), we also went with one that you can talk in privacy mode as well (in other words you would basically hold it like a cell phone next to your ear and no one else could hear the other end of the discussion). Ours are Motorola...bought them about 6 years ago (at that time they were about $79 apiece) and we are still using them today and they are going strong. We've had only limited issues on the ship catching up with our kids over the the years and it was typically when we were at far opposite ends and one of us was way down in the hull portion. Other than that we really didn't have to much of any problems.
sweetpea-2 Posted July 27, 2006 #4 Share Posted July 27, 2006 we didn't have any however there were some people that did and they seemed to be agrivated most of the time with them...seemed like mulitple conversations going on all at once from what I could tell
captstubing Posted July 27, 2006 #5 Share Posted July 27, 2006 They are great (if they are really good). Used them with our children and used them just to keep in touch with my wife if I went someplace alone. Highly recomended.
Theresa522 Posted July 27, 2006 #6 Share Posted July 27, 2006 Hi, we were on Explorer and used them. They worked great! Ours were $40 for (2) at toys-r-us. Motorola T5000 We will be using them again on the Dawn next April.. :D
diamondf467 Posted July 28, 2006 #7 Share Posted July 28, 2006 Hi. We used them on all of our cruises. Great way to find out where people are. The only thing is you might have to change frequencys often because other people sometimes come on to yours. We experienced no inteference at all.
