mike35 Posted August 22, 2006 #1 Share Posted August 22, 2006 We're booked on the Statendam 12/22 - 1/6. Hanukkah starts 12/25 and lasts until 1/1/07. Does anyone know if HAL has any plans for its Jewish guests during this period? Mike
elmel Posted August 22, 2006 #2 Share Posted August 22, 2006 We have been on two HAL cruises during Chanukah and both times there was a Rabbi on board complete with services, a menorah, wine, and yes, even potato latkes. We even took a batch of them to our table mates. They definitely were not as good as mine but we had to commend HAL on providing these wonderful amenities. Enjoy your cruise. arzz Posted August 22, 2006 #3 Share Posted August 22, 2006 We, too, have done many Hannukah cruises over the years. HAL always has a Rabbi and a grand time is had by all. Remember to confine the real candles to the group observance and use electric or other alternatives in your cabin. Years ago I made an elaborate paper menorah that we would tape to the cabin mirror -- each day we added a paper candle and a flame for our own private observance before the group observances with the rest of our Jewish shipmates. To me, the flame is not as important as recognizing and observing the ritual and customs. Of course, my latkes are better than the ship's latkes but then, again, I never complain about any food that I do not have to prepare myself. Go and enjoy Hannukah at sea!
