Pub Crawl

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me the cost of the Pub Crawl? This is a ship sponsored event where you visit each bar (in a group) and have a drink. The ship provides you with a shirt and each bartender will sign it before moving on to the next bar.

A group of us are going to be on the Freedom and want to plan to do this.

THe pub crawl does not include drinks at each bar you need to pay for most of them yourself, it depends on what port the pub crawl takes place in. We had signed up for one in Victoria, BC in May and it was cancelled.

Though I must say that I am shocked that Royal Caribbean is promoting drinking while off the ship and not in their own bars.

Unforgiven: that was funny! thanks for the laugh!

I completely misunderstood this concept at first. I thought it meant that you'd go from bar to bar ON THE SHIP and get a cocktail (and get a shirt signed).

As for RCI encouraging drinking off the ship, I guess it's like any other tour. They'll make their fare share of $$, I have no doubt. Many other tours, particularly beach/snorkeling tours in Mexico and the Caribbean, include lots of drinking.

As for 'over serving', maybe the cocktails on this crawl aren't all that strong.

Alcohol Statistics

  •
More than 100,000 U.S. deaths are caused by excessive alcohol consumption each year. Direct and indirect causes of death include drunk driving, cirrhosis of the liver, falls, cancer, and stroke.1

At least once a year, the guidelines for low risk drinking are exceeded by an estimated 74% of male drinkers and 72% of female drinkers aged 21 and older.2

    65.gif
65% of youth surveyed said that they got the alcohol they drink from family and friends.7

Nearly 14 million Americans meet diagnostic criteria for alcohol use disorders.5

Youth who drink alcohol are 50 times more likely to use cocaine than those who never drink alcohol.3

Among current adult drinkers, more than half say they have a blood relative who is or was an alcoholic or problem drinker.1

Across people of all ages, males are four times as likely as females to be heavy drinkers.1

More than 18% of Americans experience alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence at some time in their lives.6

Traffic crashes are the greatest single cause of death for persons aged 6–33. About 45% of these fatalities are in alcohol-related crashes.4

Underage drinking costs the United States more than $58 billion every year — enough to buy every public school student a state-of-the-art computer.2

Alcohol is the most commonly used drug among young people.1

Problem drinkers average four times as many days in the hospital as nondrinkers — mostly because of drinking-related injuries.1

Alcohol kills 6½ times more youth than all other illicit drugs combined.2

  • Concerning the past 30 days, 50% of high school seniors report drinking, with 32% report being drunk at least once.2

I don't want to preach but I do feel that alcohol mis-use is a massive problem.

I have a pub crawl in Key west booked for our upcoming trip. It includes 1 drink in 5 different bars with a tee shirt. I think the cost is close to $40 if I remember.

In all seriousness alcohol can be a big problem. No doubt about that and you'll never hear me say other wise. But the fact is my life while not on vacation is too busy to drink alcohol most of the time, or if I do it's during a weekend. So if I want to have a few extra while on Vacation, well that' what I'll do. So please don't call me an alcoholic or something just because I want to do a pub crawl.

Just so you don't all think I'm some modern-day prohibitionist mad woman - I wasn't really getting concerned about events like your 5 drinks in Key West. Perhaps I misunderstood (?) but I thought that the OP was talking about having a Pub Crawl around the ship itself which would involve many opportunities to imbibe. This was what I was disagreeing with.

At the risk of speaking only in cliches - 'A little of what you fancy does you good' but 'moderation in all things'.

p.s The statistic quoted means that the alcohol is given to minors freely by this percentage.

I did a Pub Crawl when I was in Aruba on the Brilliance of the Seas. We went between the bars on a fun bus (Kukoo Kunuku), at each bar we had a ticket for one drink and could buy more if wanted to, or you could buy a refillable cup that was much larger but had a lid on it. We went to five different bars. It was fun and safe because all of us on our bus were watching out for each other.

The Pub crawl is done on the ship, on a sea day and is sponsored by the ship. You have to have a drink at each bar, IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU HAVE TO HAVE AN ALCOHOLIC DRINK! And I'm sure people do not get falling down drunk or the ship would not continue to offer it.

We did a pub crawl in Key West on one of our cruises. We got a t-shirt and had a drink (I drank Coke...really) at each bar. We walked from place to place and yes, some people were falling down drunk at the end. You just have to be careful. One of the places had a musician playing guitar and singing, one place had a pool table, etc. It was a fun thing to do with a group of friends and family. I didn't see anyone getting their t-shirts signed, though. The drinks were limited in what you could order.

It was an excursion, like any other excursion and the cruise line made money off of it.

Carnival had a ship-facilitated pub crawl on the ship one night on our last Carnival cruise on the Valor. I haven't seen it on any of my RCI cruises though. I viewed it at the time as another one of those ways Carnival just tries to milk every dime out of their guests (there are many such activities). They did provide a small discount on each drink during the event.

I don't really have an opinion on it and wouldn't complain if I saw it on RCI because afterall, participation is 100% voluntary! Anybody participating in the "pub crawl" would likely be somewhere drinking during that period of time anyway.

We were on the Explorer last August and while at Quest a group was escorted onto the floor and they were introduced as "Bar Hoppers". They were being led by one of the RCI cruise staff members and the staff member indicated that they were visiting each bar for a drink. It looked like a lot of fun and we just wanted to find out if this would be available on the Freedom when we sail in October.

We went on the Key West Pub Crawl on our cruise in '04. We had a GREAT time. You were issued 5 tickets and had a guide who took you to 5 different bars. Along the way the guide pointed out different landmarks and told stories about pirates, Hemingway, Jimmy Buffett, and so on. It was a little bit of history, a few drinks, and LOTS of camaraderie.

Upon arrival at each bar we were told the specials on food, and it ended up that most of us bought appetizers and shared them with everyone else! It was a LOT of food. There were approximately 10 couples, with a few singles thrown in, so we were STUFFED by the time the Pub Crawl was over. Just about everyone was eating the entire time! Yes, a few people got rowdy, but that was ok! It was a GREAT way to meet some of our fellow passengers and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

We're going back to Key West on our cruise in a few weeks, and we signed up for the Pub Crawl again. DH and I are in our 40's and consider ourselves pretty responsible, non-rowdy types.

Everyone is different, which makes the world go 'round, and if this activity is just not your thing, then that's ok with us.

By the way, the idea of a Pub Crawl on-board sounds like a fun idea! Perhaps we'll suggest that on our Roll-Call!

Have a HAPPY evening!

Suze!

As with any other voluntary activity, it is really up to the individual person to know what they can and can't handle. Quite a few of us plan on joining in on this activity with the OP and not everyone is a heavy drinker. I happen to know that for myself, after about 3 or 4 drinks, depending on the alcohol content, I switch to something non-alcoholic.

I understand that some may have very strong views about alcohol, but if someone is here to ask a simple question and is just looking for an answer from anyone who may know that answer, do you really think they need a lecture?

Actually, you do sound like a prohibitionist mad woman, but not really modern-day. I don't think I could put you and modern day in the same sentence. But in all honesty, I don't think the OP asked for statistics from you. They asked how much the SHIP SPONSORED activity was. And that is truly the only answer that needs to be given here. I am sorry that you have such strong feelings on this subject, but you really need to let it go. If it TRULY offends you, then maybe you could ask your captain on YOUR cruise to refrain from having that activity while you are on YOUR cruise. I can hear the laughter now.

Anyway, to the OP, I still plan on joining you in the fun pub crawl....see you there.

If they don't offer it on the Freedom, who's to say we can't organize one ourselves. Just be sure to bring a sharpie and t-shirt! ;)

Come to think of it.....it would be another reason to bring that purple boa!

Carnival had a ship-facilitated pub crawl on the ship one night on our last Carnival cruise on the Valor.

Carnival used to have these on every cruise, but starting in March of 2005 the CD's were ordered to cancel all future crawls. I guess one got out of hand... But I can tell you this... They were loads of fun

We are the Pub Crawl, the Mighty Mighty Pub Crawl....:p

To each his/her own, I say!

That said, I was the group leader for several group cruises in which we had a pub crawl in our silly pajamas.........some time back, Carnival did "copy" the idea and made it one of their ships' activities on a regular basis. I didn't realize that they had stopped doing them. Too bad.

As far as our group goes, I don't recall anyone getting out of hand; just lotsa fun and oh, the looks we got! We also had a contest for the silliest pj's, most creative, etc, stuff like that! And, we generally tried to end them in the disco so all could continue the party.

As one of the older gals going on the Freedom, I think I know by now how to handle myself and have not seen anyone writing they planned on getting stupid or drunk and if they do it is there business. All our 8 gals plan on doing this sounds like a great time and we have 2 who don't drink booze but will have virgin drinks.

Thats my opnion. now back to the question.
