waterbug1 Posted September 3, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 3, 2006 Does anyone have any suggestions of a really good shop(s) in Lisbon where we can buy the wonderful custard confections known as Belem tarts? Thanks
ldog Posted September 3, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 3, 2006 You have to go to Belem to get them. We took the streetcar tour which stopped right beside the shop and there was time to go in an fight the crowds to buy them. A Portuguese friend had told me about them and it was well worth the lineup. They are amazing! cheers
Coolgran Posted September 3, 2006 #3 Share Posted September 3, 2006 Most of the Coffee shops sell them. Try the one in Rossio Square, if you face the opera house it is on your right hand side. They are delicious. We have bought them there many times.
luvnorway Posted September 4, 2006 #4 Share Posted September 4, 2006 Like previous posters, we have seen the Pastéis de Belém in many pastry shops in Lisbon. Belem is particularly noted for them (thus the name). The shop we prefer, which I first read about as being highly recommended either on the internet or in a guidebook (can't remember the source now) is the one below. Whenever we have been there, it has been full of locals who were buying and eating them = always a good sign! Antiga Confeitaria de Belém - Rua de Belém, 84 - you can easily locate it on a map of Lisbon - the street parallels the riverfront and the pastry shop is located on the North side in between the Palace de Belem and Jeronimos Monastery BTW, we enjoy walking and like to do so through non-touristy neighbourhoods -> often walk to Belem from the ship if we are docked at Doca de Alcantara - it isn't as far as walking into the city centre (although we always do that too) - much of the walk to Belem is along the riverfront As a previous poster mentioned, you can also take the tram to Belem - lots to see and do in that area
waterbug1 Posted September 4, 2006 Author #5 Share Posted September 4, 2006 My thanks to all of you who posted. We will be in Lisbon for three days so we should be able to do some ample sampling of these tasty treats. Luvnorway – we are also dedicated walkers and will plan a trek to Belem. It will help burn a few of those tart calories! Thank you too, for the tip on Antiga Confeitaria de Belem. It will be the first place we stop.:D
