Grandeur dent?

Hey everyone, just curious but is there a reason for the large dent near the water line on the Grandeur of the Seas? Is this something recent or just an old wound they haven't fixed? I saw her just come into port at Miami and it was the first thing to catch my eye... but then again, I rarely see her.

She was damaged in Costa Maya last year when she hit the pier. It was a hole as well as a dent! (unless this is something new)

Looks like they've done quick repairs on the hole. Couldn't sail with a gaping hole in the side. Further repairs to be done....

Not the first time a ship has hit the pier in Costa Maya either. What is it with that pier, anyway?

Here's a pix from when she was pretty!!!!

I was on the Splendour the day before the Grandeur crashed. We had 'tapped' the pier ourselves! I was chatting with the captain at the time's wife, who was watching the manouvers (sp?) away from the dock from their cabin. She said the dock workers face's were priceless (from horror to jubilation) and that her husband (Capt Yngvar) had said 'one has to have a stomach of steel' in those situations. Costa Maya has some seriously strong inbound currents. Fine for the 'inside' pier, but if a ship has to approach the 'outside' one - it can be difficult. I've experienced some days onboard while docked in Costa Maya that were bumpier than an average day at sea!

When Grandeur of the Seas anchors in Key West, you can get an excellent up close look at that amazing "dent." Actually it looks like someone drove a giant size fork lift through the side. I thought it was funny because right beside the dent it says, "No tugs" in big letters. I wondered if, in fact, a tug had hit the Grandeur.

The pier where Grandeur docks in Costa Maya is so far from land that they send jitneys out to transport passengers to shore. It's not surprising that the current is strong there. The port is Disneyworldish.

Grandeur is very seaworthy. The captain just has to keep the bow above water.
