BooBooTX Posted September 26, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 26, 2006 I have been reading these boards to learn more about the need for private guides at our ports which include: Athens, Patmos, Rhodes, Santorini, Corfu, Taormina and Sorrento. So far it seems we will be okay without a private guide at Patmos, Rhodes and Santorini, although we are thinking about contacting Nikos from Santorini Private Tours for Santorini. We do usually like to use private guides. In Rhodes, can we do justice to the old town plus Lindos (by taxi) in one day? We are in port about 11 hours. Any suggestions on private guides at any of our other ports will be greatly appreciated. Have seen many recommendations for Athens for drivers but only one for a licensed guide. Rare Hlitner Posted September 27, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 27, 2006 If you are going to limit your visit to Old Town (you can also walk into the adjacent new town) and Lindos you will have more than enough time. Hank
BooBooTX Posted September 28, 2006 Author #3 Share Posted September 28, 2006 Thank you Hank. We thought we would limit ourselves to Old Town and Lindos, unless you have other suggestions. We probably wouldn't want to go to any beaches.
Rare Hlitner Posted September 29, 2006 #4 Share Posted September 29, 2006 Booboo, I think you have a great plan. My big complaint about Lindos is that you must walk up a lane from the parking lots to the ruins. This lane is lined with venders selling everything from greek statues to T-shirts. It kind of cheapens the atmosphere...on the other hand they probably had venders on this same road thousands of years ago. Hank
CKD Posted September 29, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 29, 2006 We got off the ship and walked to and around Old Town for a few hours and then on the way back to the ship came to a taxi stand where we worked to get a 40 euro rate for a taxi ride of the island. It was a spur of the moment kind of thing but turned out to be very enjoyable. It was about four hours with a couple 20 minute stops and a bunch of other stops for photos. For 3 people it was money well spent. Driver was great and took us to "the best gelato in Europe" to end the day.
