K&M2CRUZ Posted October 5, 2006 #1 Share Posted October 5, 2006 I was reading a newsletter yesterday and it said they were going to extend the need of a passport until June 2009, and it also said something about making a cruise card, for cruisers only to use.(hope I read everything right) if someone else has heard about this let me know.

K&M2CRUZ Posted October 6, 2006 Author #4 Share Posted October 6, 2006 Not sure if this will answer all of your questions but did you see this Cruise Critic news item? http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=1815 So I guess this means that you will not need a passport if you are doing a roundtrip cruise within the U.S until June 2009 and by then hopefully they will come up with a cheaper pass card for cruisers. correct:confused: Thanks for your help
cherylandtk Posted October 6, 2006 #5 Share Posted October 6, 2006 Perhaps, but it remains to be seen how and when this becomes implemented. Its not yet in effect, and according to most accounts, all the one-way Alaska cruises and the cruises that stop in Barbados will need passports. Most Caribbean cruises (not all) will be exempt. Until an implementation date is set, there may even be a period of time between Jan 8 '07 and the new date where all cruises require passports. About all anyone can say for certain is to 'stay tuned for more develeopments'. The PASS card is intended for land border crossings (Canada and Mexico), and for persons who do this on a frequent basis. It might be expanded to include Alaska cruises, or all cruises or none. cherylandtk Posted October 6, 2006 #6 Share Posted October 6, 2006 Just saw a reference to the PASS card being suitable for use on both land and sea, but not air, crossings. Which is more than what the first version had; trying to keep up with all the changes is daunting.
spongerob Posted October 6, 2006 #7 Share Posted October 6, 2006 Please read the Sticky Message which has just been updated. (Thanks, Host-with-the-most Caroline). Cruise passengers apparently will not require passports when traveling to certain destinations. However, consider this: If you have an emergency, or something happens to the ship that requires you to fly home, you might be SOL. You will need to have a passport to re-enter the US by air starting in January.

But then nothing will ever happen so they'll be able to put off getting a passport for another couple of years. How much do you want to bet that we get people posting on the boards complaining that they had to cancel part of their cruise and no one ever told them they'd need a passport to get back into the U.S. via air. Bottom line: get a passport! You never, ever know what might happen.

Lynda90 Posted October 6, 2006 #11 Share Posted October 6, 2006 I got my passport in July 04. Since that time there have been two and possibly three significant price increases. You are much better off getting your passports asap, before the price goes up again, again and again.
