Phone calls in Nassua?

If you need to call home while in port what is the best way to do that? Should I buy a calling card in the states? Or will my cell phone work? :D

The best way to call from Nassau is to buy a cheap calling card while you are in port in Nassau (ask your waiter for recommendations on where to make a phone call). Do not bother buying a calling card in the US as most sold in the US are only good for calling FROM the US, not to the US.

 

Whether or not your cell phone will work will depend on your carrier and the type of phone you have. I have Cingular, have a GSM phone, and have international calling added to my phone and have been able to make phone calls from Nassau. You can call and ask your cell provider whether or not you will have service there.

won't work unless you call your service provider and get international calling added to your service. once you are out to sea beyond the reach of closest land tower service is gone. whatever you do, do not use the phones on the pier at nassau. they are very expensive. we checked them out and the operator told us $25 for first 5 minutes. $2 something each additional minute.

Calling cards purchased in the US, be they Walmart, Walgreens or Sam's Club, don't work on the islands anywhere. You have to purchase local calling cards in each port. Unless you have a cell phone with GSM or GPRS capability, you won't get service in too many places. You need international calling services to use the cells outside the US.
