Four hours on our own?

Unfortunately our ship is in port from 8:00am untill 1:00pm. Having to be back on ship by 12:30, this give us no more than a "taste" of the island. Is it possible to taxi to the West End for a little shopping and then taxi to a beach for some R and R? Is there anything else we have to sqeeze in? I would have to believe that using transportation on the island ( taxis and vans) would be less expensive than a "tour". Can anyone concur?

walk away from the boat a couple blocks ...take the local bus to west end for about 2 dollars each..cab ride back for about the same amount . willie

I'd probably taxi to West End in that situation. It's about a 20 minute ride. There is some shopping in the community, along with a number of little restaurants & bars to get a bite to eat and/or a beverage. There is a beach area in West End that is decent.

If you have some time after you've shopped, hop a water taxi to West Bay Beach (you can catch the boats at the western end of town, your left as you face the water). They usually load/unload at the 2nd of the buildings that are built out in the water. They'll charge a couple of dollars for a boatride to West Bay Beach, which is very, very nice.

we grabbed a cab to west end beach; cost was $20 pp return as advertised on the board when you get off the ship. We were traveling with two toddlers, so no time to haggle a better price. The cab driver waited for us for a couple of hours and took us back. Great service, and takes the stress out of getting back in time. Worth the extra $$ as far as I am concerned!
