? about getting upgraded

Hi folks,

Hubby and I are sailing on the Miracle next year. We are reserved in a balcony cabin on the Main deck. I am wondering what are the chances of being upgraded to one of those mini suite Cat 11 cabins, if the ship does not sail full? Do they actually do that? Is it a real possibility? If they do, how do they base which passengers get it? Does it go by how many times the person has cruised with Carnival? Just wondering.

Thanks :)

If you have booked a specific cabin the chances of any type of upgrade are near zero. If you have booked an 8A guarantee you have a very good chance of being upgraded to a higher level category 8 but a very small chance of being upgraded to a suite.

Thanks. Oh well, I can dream can't I. :D One day I would love to book one of those suites. They look so nice.

I know what you mean. We finally took the plunge and booked an aft wrap-around Cat.11 suite on the Carnival Spirit for our Anniversary cruise in April 2008.:D Since it's a 12 day cruise with 5 consecutive sea days we felt it would be worthwhile for us. We have about 500 days to save up for it.

Our PVP told me there is a formula they go by. I guess they look at when you booked, how much you paid, and how many cruises you have been on with them. The early bookers and higher paying guests really should have the best upgrades. For us last time we went from a 4a to a 4g so we were very happy. Twice we have done the guarantee and have been very happy both times. We have never been upgraded when we chose our cabin. I like living on the edge and doing the guarantee! :)

being an early booking didnt mean anything for us.. unless early is like 6 months out. We booked our first 4 cruises as guarantees -booking over a year out each time. Not one of those times did we get upgraded--not even one deck. Since we pay a low price to begin with we book our set cabin now.

By reading these boards you would think that upgrades happen all the time. But cruisecritic members represent less then 1% of the cruising public.

Most upgrades happen within the category- rare does it happen that one books a balcony and gets a suite. But yes, it does happen.

Mostly-- who pays the most will get the upgrade first.

We booked our upcoming Fantasy cruise 14 months in advance and got NO upgrade at all - even though at the time our stateroom was assigned there were still staterooms available in every category. Same thing with my inlaws' booking. You should never assume you will get an upgrade with a guarantee no matter HOW early you book - and I've seen many people here (not referring to the OP) that expect to be upgraded then get angry/disappointed when they don't. I figure the Riviera Deck will just mean more excercise for us all :-)

Hate to say this but, it does happen...my daughter, mother and i booked a specific balcony cabin on our last cruise (April 06) and when i went to do the fun pass, the cabin number had changed. We were upgraded to a suite - when i called Carnival, they had no idea how it happened. It was great being able to bypass all of the lines, get one-on-one service with check in and a personal escort to our cabin.

hope it happens again!

We had a 6A cabin and paid it off about 3 weeks early. We received a call in less than a week after final payment and we were upgraded to Cat. 12 cabin and also received VIP status. So you never know. We really don't know why we got upgraded but we are not complaining. Good luck to you.:)

We booked 7 months out, specifically picked 3 balconys in a row on the Panorama deck, 8E and were then upgraded to CAT 11. The same side of the ship, and all 3 of our cabins in a row. I was SHOCKED!! Never sailed carnival before, only princess. So yes, the upgrade fairy is indeed real.

Stay tuned to my member name, I'll have pics in a little over a month!!
