Silly Question about "The Noise"

This is a rather silly question, but I am curious and DH and I are disagreeing about the possible cause of "the noise", so I thought I'd ask the Board and see if anybody really knows.

 

We have been on 5 HAL cruises on different classes of ship and in staterooms from outside to suite. On every cruise we occasionally hear a loud noise of short duration, it's kind of a banging noise. To me it sounds possibly like the toilet paper dispenser from a neighboring cabin being given a sharp pull, but magnified somehow. DH thinks it is a pipes and plumbing related noise. Does anybody know what I am talking about? If so, and you know what it is, could you enlighten me? It's just one of those little things that I only thought about just now when reading another thread about a different noise.
