Mark Posted November 26, 2006 #1 Share Posted November 26, 2006 Do you all remember the chimes that you would hear on ships announcing that lunch or dinner was being served in the dining rooms? What ever happened to those chimes and that tradition? I don't remember hearing them on any of my recent cruises on RCCL or CCL...
sparkly Posted November 26, 2006 #2 Share Posted November 26, 2006 Chimes are heard on HAL ships. The Yum yum Man strolls around with his xylophone calling pax to the dining rooms. It is a tradition that we miss when sailing other lines.
isujim Posted November 27, 2006 #3 Share Posted November 27, 2006 NOw that you mention it.........I do remember those chimes:)
Genessa Posted November 27, 2006 #4 Share Posted November 27, 2006 I remember hearing the chimes on the Home Lines and hearing soemthing similar, if not identical on Princess - but can't guarantee it was on all Princess cruises we've been on. It could just be that the chimes they sound before making an announcement remind me of the dinner chimes...or maybe everything on a cruise ship reminds me of eating ;). Mark Posted November 27, 2006 Author #5 Share Posted November 27, 2006 Well I have not sailed on Princess and HAL, but I have sailed many times on RCCL, NCL and CCL and once on Home Lines...I think the chimes disappeared at some time with the new ships since they chose not to put the chimes onboard as an option...the older ships on these lines did have and use the chimes...by older I mean 70s thru mid to late 90s and the Norway. My guess is that some corporate office person thought they were old fashioned and an non-essential option / expense for a ship...too bad...I sort of enjoyed hearing them since I knew what the announcement was about to say!
CaptData Posted November 28, 2006 #6 Share Posted November 28, 2006 I did love that on HAL.
Cruzman Posted November 28, 2006 #7 Share Posted November 28, 2006 I did love that on HAL. If you wanna hear it again, just book a cruise on HAL. They still do it!
LHP Posted November 28, 2006 #8 Share Posted November 28, 2006 Hubby and I were just talking on the last cruise how much we missed the chimes on Carnival. Silly how little things stick with you...but we thought it added a little something.
cruisinbuddy Posted November 28, 2006 #9 Share Posted November 28, 2006 I've never heard these on any of my cruises. I think that with different dining times it would get too confusing.
dmk446 Posted November 29, 2006 #10 Share Posted November 29, 2006 In the old days the chimes were as much a part of dinner as was the table settings, service and the food :)
agabbymama Posted November 29, 2006 #11 Share Posted November 29, 2006 In the old days the chimes were as much a part of dinner as was the table settings, service and the food :) As Cruzman says, just book a HAL cruise, they do still sound the chimes for dinner. Hopefully it doesn't fall by the wayside, as so many of the little amenities are these days.:D

cigarman Posted November 30, 2006 #13 Share Posted November 30, 2006 On the Volendam Nov 13 - 23 2006 the chimes were in fact in attendance. DW and I heard them call us to dinner each night while enjoying adult beverages in the Ocean Bar. Funny now that we are home they have stopped. Very nice tradition. Avril Posted November 30, 2006 #14 Share Posted November 30, 2006 They still have those?? Awsome!!!! :D I thought that was something they had on ships around the time Titanic sailed (and sank  ). I would love that excpet at 22, I think I'm too young to enjoy HAL. chasetf Posted December 1, 2006 #15 Share Posted December 1, 2006 I think they went out with anytime dining. I remember them on my early cruises, but I cannot remember them on HAL but that does not mean they were not there......Just have CRS as I get older. The definitely are not on Princess.
