Bicycles?

We were in Cozumel in March off of the Paradise and enjoyed it so much that we have decided to return for a land vacation. We are staying at the Iberostar. The hotel has bicycles available for use. We were wondering if there is any place to really ride the bikes that is "safe." We've heard the horror stories of the scooters on the island (how there are so many accidents). We were wondering if we could get by with riding the bikes to some of the better reefs to go snorkling. If so, is there anywhere to put the bikes while we are in the water? We don't want to take a chance on them getting stolen. Are we allowed to take the bikes with us onto the beach, or do they need to stay in the parking lot?

Thanks!!

Not sure exactly where the Iberostar is, just know it's south of town. Going south of the cruise ship piers they have recently built a new "highway" to points south. It has wide lanes, shoulders ect. Before it was built the old road runs closer to the beach parallel to the new highway. All the cabs use the new road unless they have to use the old for the destination. The old road would be where you could ride without fear for you life. You can see on this map the two roads that split just north of Dzul Ha.

Just be careful wherever you ride. The cab drivers while good, are always in a big hurry.

Suggest you get this map available online which is a great help to anyone visiting the island.

I'll second the suggestion to get the Cozumel map. Iberostar is the farthest south on the west side of the island, so cab fare to town will be more costly. It sure looks nice:
