The word "posh" comes from the nautical "Port Out,

 

Fun fact: How to remember what side of the ship Port and Starboard are "Port" has four letters just like "left" if you are facing the bow (front) of the ship the left side of you is the port side the starboard side is the right.

 

To the OP: Thank you so much for asking this question I have always wondered that but never had the guts to ask! haha

 

A few that I use all the time are BTW (by the way) and OMG (oh my gosh).
