Reasons for Upgrading

We were recently significantly upgraded for a cruise we are taking next month. I'm interested in why cruise lines do this and if one can do something to maxiimize the chances of this happening. Is it because it needs lower price cabins to sell? Or the cruise is undersubscribed? Or something else?

Upgrades are pretty much luck of the draw. The lower your catagory the more room you have to move up (within limitations)

 

As you surmise, they do it to free up the lower catagories. When they have the last minute sales / post final payments sales the folks who respond to those are looking to get on at the cheapest fare possible and are not looking for a specific cabin.

 

My take is.....if someone bought an inside a year prior, and now someone is getting the same cabin catagory at a discount, guess the cruise line wants to favor the one who paid the most and paid the earliest.
