Seabourn in Nicaragua

Those wondering why Seabourn stops at San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua on its Panama Canal cruises may want to check out this weekend's (12/16-12/17) NY Times Travel section. The lead story highlights this port as well as the colonial town of Granada, which is visited on an all-day Seabourn excursion. Seabourn seems to be visiting one the newest "hot spots" in Central America tourism.

We were on the recent abbreviated Panama Canal cruise and went on the tour to Granada, which also includes a boat trip around La Isletas. Would thoroughly recommend this tour as a great way to see more of Nicaragua, spend time in Granada which is a fascinating place, and enjoy the wildlife on the boat trip (lots of birds and monkeys). The transfer time is around 2 hours to Granada from San Juan del Sur.

We did not get the chance to look around San Juan del Sur, but friends who did said that they liked it very much and that everyone was extremely friendly.

They also had a great "canopy tour" from San Juan del Sur. It was on the side of a volcano, flying over a coffee plantation. Those of us who went rated it well in excess of a Disneyland "E-ticket ride"! It was in the direction of Granada, but turned off before the city.

Our guide commented that Nicaragua was the second poorest country in the Americas (only Haiti is poorer), and that 50% are unemployed. Something like 1 million Nicaraguans are in Costa Rica, and almost a million more are in the U.S.
