San Diego - Anthony's or Fish Market

I like them both. Anthony's Fish Grotto is less formal (and less expensive) and more of a family style restaurant. It is a San Diego institution, and many of their dishes have been on their menu for 50 years. On the other hand, some don't like the informality or the old fashioned service (which can be a little rushed and impersonal) or the fact that they do not take reservations, so you may have to wait to be seated an hour or more during busy times. They serve only seafood. Their upscale restaurant (Anthony's Star of the Sea) has closed and will be opening in the future as Ghio’s Seafood & Steaks but I have not heard a date yet. It is next door to the Fish Grotto.

The Fish Market has both the downstairs (less formal and less expensive) and upstairs (more expensive, more formal) areas, and they do take reservations. Their food is good, and so is the service, but you will pay for than at Anthony's. It is a chain restaurant, if that makes a difference (so it is not unique to San Diego).

Both have great views of the bay.

You can get both their menu's on-line at their websites, so you may want to check that out.

We ALWAYS go to Anthony's several times when visiting San Diego. We find their food fantastic and their service wonderful. A few items we have tried: crab cakes, calamari, shrimp artichoke dip, shrimp trio (the coconut shrimp is fabulous!), lobster thermidor, halibut, orange roughy, slamon and sole. Yikes! I'm getting hungry!
