markb Posted July 22, 2004 #1 Share Posted July 22, 2004 We are going on the adventurer of the seas on 8/8 and I am thinking of signing my teenage kids to do this program while on ship. The information presented says it includes 12 hours of instruction/pool time while on board and 2 certification dives on Curacao. Once complete you recieve a PADI certification. All this for $249 Does anyone have any expierence with this program, I would like to hear your input. Regards, Mark
Hilary Posted July 23, 2004 #2 Share Posted July 23, 2004 Keep in mind that the "certification" you receive doing this program is the PADI Scuba Diver. This means that you are certified to dive with a Dive Master or Instructor, but you are not certified to dive alone or receive tank fills. It is one step below the Open Water certification, which certifies you to be an independent diver. Also $249 is not cheap for this, but it would be a great activity for your kids and they would probably absolutely love the adventure.
markb Posted July 23, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted July 23, 2004 Hilary, Thank you that is exactly the information I was looking for. I was certified NAUI in 1977 as "Scuba Diver" and although I have over 300 loged dives over the years I have never bothered to get additional certification. Do you suppose that local dive shops will recoignize this and allow them to move right into the "open water certification"? without additional course work or instruction. Hilary Posted July 24, 2004 #4 Share Posted July 24, 2004 Yes, as I recall you can apply your "Scuba Diver" certification towards Open Water at any time. I'm not sure that SSI or NAUI will recognize it, but PADI sure will.
