Hotel in FLL near Airport

We dock on a Sunday in Miami but fly out of FLL early monday so I want to stay in FLL. A few questions:

-Are there any decent yet reasonable hotels by the airport?

-Is there anything to do around the airport?

-How would you suggest I spend the day with two kids 13 and 9 in FLL...anything good to do/see?

We usually stay at the Holiday Inn Express on 17th. It has always been clean and comfortable as well as affordable. I believe that they have a shuttle to FLL.

 

It's about a 2 block walk to the riverfront where you can catch the water taxi. It's a great way to get up to Las Olas or just cruise the waters and look at the homes and boats.

I forgot to mention that there is also a trolley system that is new since the last time we visited. We'll be checking it out next trip.
