Tipping issue: different views

I've read numerous posts where CCers have said that they have spoken directly to staff and supervisors about this. Apparently, it's a combination of peer pressure, honesty and a fear of losing one's job that gets the staff to turn in any tips that are given to them directly.

JPinkston--yes you are expected to tip your guide and sometimes the driver, if it is the same one for the whole trip. I give $5-10 to the guide and $2-5 to the driver depending on the length of the tour. We've cruised 7 times so far and I have trained myself to make sure I have the correct denomination of bills handy. In the US, Carib. and Mexico use US $$. In Europe and other countries use the local currency. If the transpo is just a shuttle without a real guide, we don't tip.

So if I am reading these posts right I can hand cash to a person that I think deserves more of a tip than what I paid in advance? Or is it customary to leave any additional tips at the end in the envelopes someone mentioned and not give anyone any cash during the cruise?

Do they take off the same amount of tips per day for each of your children, as well as the adults? We will be taking our 3 kids.

Most cruise lines' tip policy is per passenger. A child is also a passenger and at times a messy one.:D

 

The tips are not just for the weight staff.

 

This is what Princess suggests:

 

DISCRETIONARY HOTEL AND DINING CHARGE

During your cruise, you will meet staff throughout the ship who provide you with excellent service. Many more crew support those who serve you directly. For your convenience a discretionary Hotel and Dining charge of $10 per passenger per day (including children) will be added to your shipboard account on a daily basis. This charge will be shared amongst those staff who help provide and support your cruise experience, including the wait staff, stateroom stewards, buffet stewards, galley staff, laundry staff and others. Please note this is a discretionary charge and should you wish to remove or make any adjustments, you may do so by contacting the Passenger Services/Purser's Desk onboard.

 

Casino dealers and Lotus Spa personnel do not share in the Hotel and Dining charge as not all passengers utilize these services.

 

BAR AND WINE SERVICE CHARGE

A 15% gratuity is added to bar charges and dining room wine accounts. This is shared amongst the beverage staff and their support staff, including cleaners and utility staff. We know you will find the services onboard exemplary.

It depends on the cruise line. NCL's policy is: $10 pp/pd; children ages 3-12, $5 pp/pd; no charge for children under the age of three.
