tallen Posted April 24, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 24, 2004 Abanks has been recommended for shore diving while in GC. I have noticed that Abanks website shows them having a beach. For those of you who have been, is this beach large enough for non-diving spouse and 5 year old to lounge on and is this area appropriate for swimming. Any info would be appreciated. texaseadevil Posted April 25, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 25, 2004 Abanks has a "beachy" area set up on the volcanic rock shore with beach chairs, etc. There are steps w/handrail down to the water. But if you're looking for a scenic sandy beach, then, no, Abanks is not what you're looking for. You'd have to go to 7 mile beach for that. Abanks is terrific for shore diving, snorkelling, and a quick dip, but it's truly not scenic. You look directly at the ships anchored in front of you while the tenders zip by. They're a great outfit-we go to Cayman twice a year and always go for a dive with Abanks through Devils Grotto and Eden Roc when we get in. I hope this helps. tallen Posted April 25, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted April 25, 2004 Thanks for the info. I will already be diving in Cozumel and Belize, but if I can get in a 3rd dive that would be fantastic. However, my SO does want a beach and need some area to entertain a 5 year old. Not sure if the area around Abanks would do for this. Do you happen to know if Abanks does trips to Stingray City, the 5 year old would love to see this again. He was scared to get in last time. Again, I appreciate any info, Abanks has not responded to my email.
texaseadevil Posted April 25, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 25, 2004 Stingray City is a bit of a ride from Abanks-have you checked the website? Can't remember. I know we did Stingray with Bob Sotos. Not too far to catch the Cayman Bear from the tender area, but you'll need a taxi. Sorry to hear John didn't respond to e-mail. You might want to do some websurfing for op that will take snorkelers and divers. 12ft at dive site, but sand bar, the water is only about 2 feet deep and ALWAYS crowded. There is a nice little cafe at Abanks with really good food and drinks, so if you just want to do a short shore dive (45 min), I'm sure family would be entertained while you cruise the grotto. He's also the least expensive dive op in that area. We'll be diving Cozumel and Belize in 13 days, along with Roatan. We're just gonna snorkel Cancun. Looking forward to some serious head dunking!
