Its getting harder to get Alcohol on the ship, In NYC they x-ray all bags now they got my rum on the last cruise but I have done it before. You have to use plastic bottles that don't look like alcohol bottles . You can not buy bottles unless you are in a Cat. such as a suite, then your cheapest bottle will be min $40. You have to ask for a bar set up. you can go to a bar get a tray of drinks and bring back to the room, but it gets very costly. But your on vacation.

We are cruisin on the Jewel on March 4..we have the cheapest INSIDE cabin..I emailed the ship coordinator on Mon and ordered a bottle of Vodka for the room. She confirmed it would be there and that the total charge was $49.00.

For mix we will use juice from the breakfast buffet or add crysal light to water...it will save us some $$, however we will still spend our share on beer and wine at dinner and during those hot days sunning on deck!!:D

After years and years of cruising, the industry has finally taken away the last bit of freedom for us social drinkers.

For years, passengers could purchase bottles of liquor from the ship's duty free liquor store for consumption during the cruise. The prices per bottle were slightly higher than what you'd pay for the bottles you'd buy at the end of the cruise to bring home, but still a great deal. Like a litre of Absolute vodka was, say $10 rather than the land price of $20...and even cheaper, say $8.50 for the bottles you'd bring home.

The industry has smartened up.

Just as they've stopped staying past midnight at ports of call, they've realized how much more $$$ could be made by holding their passengers captive, without any options.

We used to be docked overnight in many ports such as San Juan. Passengers would spend all their $$$ in clubs and casinos ashore, since the ships could not have their shops or casinos open in port (by law).

A couple of years ago, they stopped letting passengers purchase liquor bottles during the cruise.

Now they're prohibiting carrying beverages on board.

Your best bet is to purchase liquor in plastic bottles and pack them in your suitcases, not your carry ons. You run the risk that they'll be caught by X-ray machines and they'll make you come down to the naughty room to open your luggage in the presence of security where they'll take the bottles and give them back to you at the end of the cruise.

Cruise fares have really not increased at all in the last 40 years for like accomodations. The cruise lines are making all their money on drinks and in the casinos.

Good luck smuggling!

Anyone can purchase a bar setup (not just thost is suites). You need to call and order ahead of time but anyone can order one. Also, the $40 dollars per bottle (plus one time $3 setup fee) is a bargain compared to bar prices.
