Transportation options to Red Hook?

maja

Our group of 12 needs r/t transportation to Red Hook from the ship terminal.

Is it true that it costs $10 pp each way for the taxi ride? WOW!

That would be $240 just for a 10 minute ride each way!

Would we be able to find a private van to do this at the pier & perhaps give us a group rate?

I heard there is a bus we can take. Is it safe to travel on our own at night? Easy to reach bus stops at Havensight & Red Hook? About how long of a walk to the stops?

thanks.

There will be Van's, Buses, Cabs immediately upon leaving the ship. I'm going to have to refer you to other cc members on the prices for a large group.

Hello,

Yes from Havensight to Red Hook it is $10 pp, ow for taxi. Its an 18-20 minute drive in low/medium traffic. You could ask about a group rate and see what happens however prices are fixed, per person, by destination and all licensed taxis are supposed to follow the published rates.

The bus and 'dollar ride' are safe, however at night you should take a taxi so you get right from and to your destinations.

We took the $2 bus (looks just like the taxis) back from Red Hook to Havensight on our last cruise. This coming time we are taking it TO Red Hook also. Here are the directions that another CCer posted:

"An idea for those a little more adventureous...

Just got back with a group of 7.

Got off the ship and saw a racket going on. $13 for a one way to Red hook, $10 per person in groups of 2 or more. That would be $140 round trip for our group (rent a cars for half that).

So we walked outside the gate and was offered taxis for half the price. I thought, there has got to be a cheaper way. Kept walking 2 blocks toward the Kmart and found the bus that the locals use. $2 per person right to Red hook (it goes around the Island). That is $28 round trip! vs. $140. Hummm.

and they really did not stop very much.. maybe added 3-4 minutes."

And another one:

"We berthed at Havensight Pier in St. Thomas. Our destination was Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay on the Island of St. John for snorkeling. Despite what everyone at the pier will tell you (and they will lie to you), you can get local transportation for $2 per person in an open-air taxi to Red Hook to catch a ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John. Simply walk out of the Havensight pier main gate, cross the street, turn left and walk until you get to the Bus Stop (there is a pullover area) across from K-Mart and cross the street so that you are standing on the K-Mart side of the street. It is a leisurely 15-minute level walk. When you see an open-air taxi drive up, flag him down, tell him where you wish to go and enjoy the trip. The drive takes about 20 to 30 minutes each way depending upon traffic. The taxi will drop you off at the Red Hook ferry terminal. Pay upon exiting the taxi, go through the gates and hop on the ferry to St. John. We caught the 8:00am ferry and paid our $5.00/pp fare. Normally, you would pay at the booth prior to boarding. The very pretty ride across the bay runs about 15 minutes."

Thats not the only thing that adds up, $10pp taxi to Red Hook, $5 ferry fare, $6 ride to the beach...........

$6 ride from the beach back to the pier, $5 ferry ride, $10 taxi ride back to the ship.

considering i could be a few dollars off on the prices, that is roughly $42 a person for your St. John adventure not including food or drinks of course.
