When people say that they got an upgrade, do they have to pay the difference or is it free? I have never received one and was just wondering.

Sometimes the ship will need extra rooms of certain category and will bump up someone who is only using one room. They are rather rare. There may be times when people boast that they got upgraded but it was after paying a small amount of money for the upgrade.

Both forms of upgrades do occur - free ones and paid ones. If you book a guarantee, for instance, you might receive a free upgrade. But in the majority of cases, that type of upgrade will be within a category - i.e., inside to better inside, oceanview to better oceanview, etc. "Better" usually means better location on the ship. In rare instances, a free upgrade might occur between categories (e.g., oceanview to balcony) but this happens only when the ship is not selling well at all.

 

I have booked many guarantees and often have received a free upgrade within the category.
