Rental car to Montreal

We are taking the Maasdam out of Montreal on Oct 16th and using a rental car to Montreal via New York. Our rental car company assures us there are no problems taking a rental car across the border. Can anyone who has done so tell us if any problems were encountered. We use passports for ID. We posted this same request on another board before registering here but user name was already taken.
