girlfriendtoo Posted February 8, 2007 #1 Share Posted February 8, 2007 Hello all, What is JUTA and is Phil Layfette a part of it? Thanks
TOTTT Posted February 10, 2007 #2 Share Posted February 10, 2007 JUTA stands for Jamaica Union of Travelers Association. Drivers who choose to be a part of this organization must pay a fee (a substancial one I might add) and must have vehicles that meet all licensing and certification requirements for road safety. The vehicles (can be a car, van that holds 6, van that holds 12, coaches that hold 25 and 'mega buses that hold 50) are required to be air conditioned, and having seat belts as well as first aid kits and fire extinguishers, and must pass safety inspections once a year to keep licensed. All drivers must have a current road license, JTB (Jamaica Tourist Board) license and a TPD Co. (Tourism Product Development) license. Each major town has their own chapter but they all operate under the same rules. There are two other organizations that are similar...JCAL and MAXI. Phil's website will let you know whether or not he's a member of one of these organizations, or you could write and ask him directly.
Barva Posted February 11, 2007 #3 Share Posted February 11, 2007 We have a picture of Marva Shaw standing by her van. This one picture tells a lot! She is indeed a JUTA driver. I would imagine that all of the drivers recommended on this board are as well. http://travel.webshots.com/photo/2064705580052948842MMZodf TOTTT - your posts are so insightful and helpful. Thank you! HappyCruiser383 Posted April 4, 2007 #5 Share Posted April 4, 2007 I remember seeing a mini-van with "Legal Taxi" on the back window. I thought that was funny. They'll try anything. :D
