What do men wear?

Pants are required in the dining room (dinner). They specify no shorts at dinner in the dining room. Shorts are fine for breakfast and lunch in the dining room, however. There is a buffet available as an option of not going to the dining room, and that is for all three meals. He can wear shorts there. There is a hamburger/hot dog grill and pizza as well.

Hi, you didn't mention which ship you were going on. If you are going on an NCL cruise your DH can wear what mine does. A pair of docker-type pants and a nice golf shirt. Formal night on NCL is optional, I'm not even sure if they are having them anymore. My DH wore a black suit but I saw many men wearing dress pants and nice shirts. Some wore ties, and some didn't. I think for other cruise lines it might be different. The DH wore nice shorts and golf shirts/Tommy Bahama shirts and his tennis shoes (clean ones) most of the time. Even on NCL, the most casual line of all, you are not allowed to wear shots into the dining room. Tell the DH not to let having to wear long pants for dinner ruin your trip. Cruises are so much fun! He can always change back into shorts after dinner.:D

I agree, just get him some khaki's and a few nicer short sleeve shirts for dinner. My DH hates to dress up, and griped for months before our first cruise. Now, he's the one who wants to eat in the dining room every night and has already bought a few "cool looking" breezy but nice short sleeve button ups to wear on our next trip. If worse comes to worse - just change immediately after dinner before you play around the rest of the evening. We are often semi dressy for supper, and then shorts and T-shirts for the rest of the evening (especially if extensive sunburn has occured). Have fun!!

As per Cruise Critic:

Consider khakis and a navy sport coat -- a can't-miss uniform when accompanied by everything from a polo shirt to (nice) t-shirt to an Oxford. You can wear this type of outfit just about anywhere but dinner on formal night. Also, unless you're hanging by the pool, some kind of shirt is, well, required.

how about dress shorts with nice pull over on casual nights? we were told that a lot of guys wear dress shorts on casual nights in the dining room.

I have never seen or heard of any line allowing any shorts in the dining room at dinner time.

I take that back ... I was on Carnival and there were a number of folks who did not receive their luggage by the first dinner seating on night 1. They were permitted to go into the dining room in shorts (because they/I had no other clothes).

To answer the original poster ... for most nights .. the colored, short sleved shirt and docker type slacks will be fine. If there is a formal night .. adding a balzer and a long sleved shirt would get him by ... but a suit would be better.

No shorts at ALL in the dining room for dinner.

The only exception is the first night as Matt said, because a lot of people don't get their luggage in time.

And as someone else stated, there are always optional dining venues. It's a cruise...the food is good everywhere.

Shorts are not allowed in the dining room at dinner time.

If wearing long pants consitutes "dressing up" for you and you husband, I think you should look at something like a Windjammer cruise where shoes are not even required. A regular cruise is not for you if wearing pants makes your husband miserable.

Even Oceania which is a line that has no formal nights would not allow shorts in the dining room at dinner.

I suppose you could eat at the buffet or have room service dinner, but walking around the ship in the evening in shorts is not acceptable attire. And he would look inappropriate at the show, a lounge, on a dance floor, in a bar, or the casino.

My father has cruised every line out there, and has more cruises under his belt than anyone one I know....

Has been taking an average of 6-8 a year for 15+years.

Shorts are never permitted in the dining room....ever.( Windjammer he has not done....)

Now, that is not to say that people do not feel they are above the guidlines and wear them anyway.....;) Enough said about that.

I hope that your husband would not let something so trivial interfere with such a great opportunity ... for you and for him.

I would say that 'dressing up' varies greatly in opinion from person from person.

My husband would not consider khakis and a button down dressing up, but I know there are those that would.

You did not tell us too much info... I am hoping you were simply referring to having to put on a full jacket and slacks every night because no, that he definatley does NOT have to do!:D

Good luck~

To the OP:

Hi,

My husband does not like to dress for dinner either, but he did because he knew that I wanted to eat in the dining room. He says that he would be perfectly happy eating at the buffet. I would be perfectly happy to never eat at the buffet. So compromise we must, I eat at the buffet with him at breakfast and he eats with me in the dining room at dinner.

Regarding shorts… on the last night of our December Princess cruise, my in-laws (4 of them) showed up for dinner in shorts and polos: the host/hostess turned them away. They had to go back to the stateroom to change clothes.

I hope you have a wonderful cruise.:)

Hello pakmount,

Please refer to the thread I Hate TO Dress Up On Vacation, you will understand what I've been trying to say IMOP  that not all, not even most will dress in tux or suit on Foraml night. They will probably not even wear a jacket and or a tie on most nights either.

GESH PEOPLE everyone does deserve to hear all sides without being called names! :o

Not feeling like I am above the guidlines just sharing the love.:D
