Agrigento, Syracuse or Piazza Armerina?

Anyone try to make any of these destinations from Messina? In checking the "Maporama" website for directions and distances it seems that some are reachable but a 2 hour drive each way. My husband and I have been to these places and loved them. This year we have our 4 grandkids and since they have been up Mt. Etna before, I was looking for another experience. We are not shy about renting a van and driving in Sicily. Have done it before. Has anyone tried this? If so any tips?
