zaandam_2 Posted March 20, 2007 #1 Share Posted March 20, 2007 Hi all. I'm considering a cruise on MSC - Genoa to Durban, South Africa on the Melody. The smoking policy on MSC's website is somewhat vague so I'm going to the experts here on CC. Is smoking allowed in the cabins? What about the outside areas around the pools? P.S. - Please let's not turn this into a 'smoking thread'. Thanks!
bwelborn Posted March 20, 2007 #2 Share Posted March 20, 2007 I was on the Lirica last week and found ashtrays in the desk cabinet of my cabin. That would lead me to believe that you could. Also, there was one bar; Lord Nelson Pub that you could smoke in as well as the outdoor bar.
RuthlessBoss Posted March 20, 2007 #3 Share Posted March 20, 2007 I went through the smoking issue with my travel agent when I read there was no smoking in the rooms. She checked, and on paper, no. But in reality, yes, they will not stop you. There are no ships basically that don't allow smoking in the room. Don't know about pool area, but outside, one side of the ship is smoking. I also beg this does not turn into a nasty thread!:D

zaandam_2 Posted March 20, 2007 Author #5 Share Posted March 20, 2007 i just called MSC, twice, and both people told me no smoking in cabins. they just lost me as a potential customer for a long and expensive cruise.
RuthlessBoss Posted March 20, 2007 #6 Share Posted March 20, 2007 Oh, I hear you!!! Same thing here but for an 11 day cruise. I don't think you'll see it in writing anywhere. They are not going to be open about it. But think about it, the Europeans are known for their smoking, just read some reviews of the Mediterranean cruises. They can't very well allow smoking there but not when they service our public with the same ships. I'm going and I will be smoking (considerately)
Rare HeinBloed Posted March 21, 2007 #7 Share Posted March 21, 2007 We travelled on MSC MUSICA through Med Sea. All restaurants were smokefree areas. Due to meanwhile Italian "habit" and law passengers went to the open deck to smoke. On the pool deck there were corners for smokers. In all bars there are areas reserved for smokers and non-smokers. I remember to have an ashtray in our stateroom which I used to deposit my change... Regards, HeinBloed N. B. Great Route!!! But to save money check also all local MSC-websites in Europe. The price difference are enourmous!!! Also check the South African operator as he is co-seller of your cruise. The winter MSC MELODY stays in South Africa and chartered by this South African operator exclusively.

Don't go by that. They HAVE to say no smoking, but there is NO ship ANYWHERE that doesn't allow smoking in the cabins. Even Disney allows smoking in the cabins. They just don't like to encourage smoking...especially in bed. I had the same issue and my TA called MSC and was told this by MSC. It is NOT enforced in the cabins. :)

RuthlessBoss Posted April 13, 2007 #10 Share Posted April 13, 2007 I had my doubts about smoking in the cabins. Returned yesterday from an 11 day cruise, brought my own ashtray (just in case), but cabin attendant gave me an ashtray upon request. Even in their safety film on the t.v. it does not ban smoking in the rooms, but emphasizes no smoking in bed. For those who are not accustomed to smoking bans in some states, there is no smoking in dining rooms, theater and open areas inside the ship, some lounges allow smoking in one side of their room. The casino is unrestricted. The pool area had an area on one side for smoking. I brought a can of Febreeze and sprayed the room often for my own mental relief, but filtration on a ship is good, and in interior rooms also (I don't know why some people think interior rooms don't have filtration)

There was ONE lounge that is a smoking lounge for cigars, pipes and cigarettes at any time. It was the Sottovento Lounge. On the last day of the cruise a woman came into the lounge and had just discovered it! Here the poor thing spent the whole cruise smoking in the casino and just found the smoking lounge on the last day! The ONLY place you couldn't smoke in that lounge was at the bar. I had ashtrays in my room and even in the bathroom and the stewards made sure they were clean every time they came in, whether they needed it or not. RuthlessBoss Posted April 14, 2007 #12 Share Posted April 14, 2007 Now that woman was following the written rules, not the actual rules. So sorry, she must have been very frustrated. For me, I looked for ashtrays on tables throughout the ship and almost fell over with the full smoking lounge on 5th level. Each morning had my coffee and ciggy by the pool smoking area just to get out of the room, but that was after my first coffee and ciggy in the room. mdelacono Posted May 21, 2007 #13 Share Posted May 21, 2007 I just returned from the Lirica's 19 day transAtlantic cruise. We had a wonderful time. This is our third time taking this cruise. As far as smoking goes..............there are ash trays in the cabins. The Lord Nelson Pub is a smoking lounge, also the coffee shop and one side of another lounge. The passageway in front of the casino is "supposed" to be non smoking, but no one pays any attention and no one enforces it. You can also smoke in the casino itself. The one thing I can't answer is smoking at the pool. The chairs (lounges) are very close together, so it might present a problem. But there are some tables and chairs in the pool area, perhaps there are ashtrays there. I no longer smoke, but I thought you would like this info. Remember.......... the crew is European and they are heavy smokers. mdelacono
clivep Posted October 1, 2007 #14 Share Posted October 1, 2007 MSC do publish the fact that smoking in the cabins is prohibited. They do this every day in the daily info sheet once you are on board. What they don't do is let you know of this policy before you board!!! The information desk told me that they could not enforce this rule and with this understanding the ban was ignored. babu666 Posted October 28, 2007 #15 Share Posted October 28, 2007 On the April Transatlantic, the cigarette smoke in the cabin corridor was awful. I encountered a security man once and complained about the issue. He said, so what, what can we do? Never a word acknowledging my concern for safety, etc. Just arrogance.
