Driving from Boston to NYC

When driving from Boston, taking 95S all the way, does anyone know how many tolls you go through? How much are the tolls and do you need change or can you give them dollar bills?

None the tolls were removed a number of years ago. The only toll in the area is on the Bridges and the Mass Turnpike which is not I 95. When you get to NY there is no toll on the thruway southbound. The Bridge to Manhattan is $4.50...

Route 95 S***S. We drive to Boston often- son goes to Emerson. There are spots that slow down to a snails pace for no reason at all other than the fact that the signs say so:rolleyes: I would take the Mass pike to 84 S to 91 S and get on route 15 in Meriden ( Merrit parkway) it's faster and a much better ride

me too and you miss almost all the truck traffic but I don't want to get into another fight some people just want to go the way they kniow. This is also about 10 miles shorter. Its like from western NJ going by the GW bridge...you get to be with the trucks I go through 280 but you should see the fight that one started...

The fight was because the pax were driving from rural Michigan. They were NOT familiar in the least with NYC traffic. They were also spending the night in Parsippany, NJ, which is darn close to I-80. You had them trying to get through the Lincoln/Holland tunnel, cross Manhattan, get through the Brooklyn Battery tunnel and then find the pier. I routed them all on Interstates-either I-80, which they were already on or I-80/95/278.

It just never seems to dawn on you that NYC traffic (in fact, most of the East Coast) traffic is COMPLETELY different than traffic in the Midwest. It is intimidating to Midwesterners, to say the least. But Midwesterners are generally much more comfortable with large semis around than are East Coasters.

My object is ALWAYS to make the trip the easiest on the driver. May not be the shortest way or the cheapest way (tolls), but generally the least stressful for the driver.

Yes but what is the best way for truck drivers has nothing to do with what is the best way for people in a passenger car. The single worst crossing into NY is almost always the GW Bridge. Traffic adds much more to stress than making a few turns....

Smeyer, my family keeps telling me the same thing. My brother went to Webb in Manhattan and he insists we go the Mass Pike. But my DH is a total moron when it comes to directions. He took my DS to a basketball tournement in Tarrytown, NY and wound up at the cruise ship pier. So, for us, the most direct route is probably the best. Living in the Boston area, traffic doesn't really bother us.

That is the route we take, I agree with crisp1......we travel the Merritt each time we go to NYC and it is the smoothest ride with no trucks.....smooth sailing. I got the directions from AAA going that way but I can't seem to paste it on here.

You are trying to compare professional drivers and a family/Mom and Pop trip. Believe me, the pros can handle the stress much better than a family drive.

A constant flow of traffic in the SAME direction on an interstate (even at a very slow pace) is much less stressful than trying to read signs, fight cross traffic, and watch out for pedestrians. Never mind the horn honking and taxi cabs which are just part of NYC traffic. This was proven in an ATA (American Trucking Association) study done in conjunction with US DOT and AAA a couple of years ago. All three entities were trying again to reduce the number of fatalities when cars/ large trucks tangle. The NUMBER ONE reason for car/truck fatalities (other than weather)-lost, stressed out car drivers stopping, turning around, or making a sudden stupid move in front of a semi on a two/three lane, multi directional, non divided road. When I find the study on the internet, I will post the link. I only have a hard copy at present.

Trucks are not allowed in the Holland Tunnel east bound at all.

I am formerly a driver safety specialist with the NY State DMV( I was also a driver improvement evaluator---which has the worst initiials)

I would bet that 95 times out of a hundred my way is faster by at least 1/2 an hour. But there are always times that no matter which way you go the other way would be faster. Yes when a truck hits a car someone is going to be in bad shape. personally I try to stay away from trucks since the drivers tend to be over tired and whether you hit the truck or the truck hits you, its you in the car that gets the short end of the stick.
