No shirts, no shoes, but we've got skates!

Another Cruise

Recommended Posts

Just finished our 27th cruise (on various lines) and this was a new low for us. After all of the posts I have read here about clothing choices in the dining room, unruly kids, and rude passengers, I think we either hit bottom (no pun intended) or I have really become a true snob.( a possibility). But can someone tell me when it became acceptable to walk around the ship barefoot, in wet swimsuits with no towel or cover-up and no shirts or shoes for the men! I’m not talking about the pool area or even the same deck the pool was on. This was in the gift shops, the atrium lobby, casino, and YES, I even saw teen and 20-something women entering the dining room on formal night, carrying their shoes. The diamond presentation in the jewelry store included men in swimsuits, no shoes and no shirts. The floor in the buffet area on Lido deck was always wet from people walking in barefoot in their wet swimsuits. Didn’t even make an effort to dry off first, and I personally saw three women fall flat after slipping. But, the REAL LOW was the kids on skates and wearing the tennis shoes with wheels the can be flipped down. They would race through buffet area and through lobby area and woe be to anyone in their way. I questioned a crew member once and was told that it was the parent’s responsibility. I pointed out that it was also Carnival’s responsibility to look out for passenger’s safety. She told me if I didn’t like it, I could write a letter. Kind of a, “tell someone who cares” attitude.

Wheelies are a pain and I thought they were not allowed. As for shoes and clothes, there are always various things in various places. As far as girls carrying shoes into the dining room, maybe the shoes that went with their outfit came a little small.

The proper name for the shoes you are talking about is Heelies, and yes my 14 year old has a pair. He WILL NOT be bringing them on our cruise, he IS NOT allowed to use them in a store or crowed area, he IS NOT allowed to use them in our home. I think it is unfortunate that parents do not take responsibility for their children. Not only do I not want my son being a danger or bother to others, but I also do not want to have to fish him out of the ocean when he flips over a railing because he was going too fast. We all know kids do not make the best decisions when left to their own devices, that is why parents are responsible for them. I am sorry the parents on your cruise sherked their duty.

Yep, they were a big problem on last two cruises. Don't know what parents are thinking allowing them on a ship:(

hmmmmmmmmmm if the kids are going to be wearing those things on cruises, maybe we need stop sticks like the police have:eek: Wonder how fast the parents would show up then???:D

My size 12's would suffice....:D :D ;)

Good for you! i have no problem with kids wearing them, just not at stores, malls or Cruise ships, beside hurting themselves in crowed areas, they could also hurt someone else.

I have read a few posts lately, where parents just see nothing wrong with letting their kids skate around the Promenade all day.

And you know if one does flip over the side of the ship, The parents will blame the cruiseline.

I have kids also, well, most are all grown and moved out with kids of their own but i would have never let me kids get away with it!

I applaude you for taking responsability as a parent.

Now could you please teach those parents what "adults only" spa means and what "rated R" comedy show means;)

Molly, if all parents were like you, there would never be any problems with unruly children. I commend you for raising your child the way I was raised. I don't understand the need to allow your children total freedom to do what they want. Children will be children and sometimes need the guidance of an adult. Unfortuantely, sometimes their parents are not "adults";)

There is nothing wrong with taking a vacation from parenting, but if that is what you want to do leave the kids at home.

Totally agree.....and that's what I will be doing in June. Leaving the kids with grandma so hubby and I can have a nice romantic and well deserved vacation. :D

I've always wondered what those Heelies will do to a kids posture. I see them all the time these days (and I really hate them) and when the kids try walking in the shoes they always looked hunched forward. Their heels are way to high off the ground to allow for normal walking. It'll be great when all these kids have humped backs by the age of 25.:(

well, i guess if you're a snob, then i am too. b/c i think that being barefoot in any restaurant in unsanitary, not to mention unsafe (who knows what you cld step on -- then you're going to start bleeding all over the ship?)

walking around barefoot in public areas (especially bathrooms), well -- that's just gross. many of those that do this are probably good candidates for foot fungus or some other foot/skin disease. and, why anyone wld want to step in someone's urine in a public bathroom barefoot (oh, double yuk) is just beyond me.

Heelies, well that's been the subjuect of umpteen million threads on here. no skates, even heelies, belong on a moving ship.

In answer t0 Gypsy Rose Question " I Dont' Understand the need to allow your children total freedom to do what they want"

Why we all know that it's in the best interest of the child to have all the freedom they want, for the parent to be their "best friend" and give them a "time out" instead of a good "butt busting" which might give them and inferiorty complex and cause them a lifetime of insecurity!

About a month ago I was in line at a major department store and a mother and grandmother were in line in front of me. The mother had four kids, all screaming, she was on the phone, letting them run wild! I tried to get her to pay attention because I knew it was going to happen, but before I could do anything, the kid, whacked me right in the face with a hockey stick!! Of course she just grinned and kept on talking! Grrrrr.....And these are the ones in the future that are going to be taking care of us when we are old and in nursing homes!!!:D

We just got back from the Miracle last week and I was surprised that there were numerous kids with heelies on. Each time I saw one, a parent was with them, so they were well-behaved. Personally, I don't care for the skate shoes at all.

I agree DS will not wear his Heelies on the ship, but from first hand experience - they dont really change your posture or ability to walk. I tried DS's (sad to say at 11 yrs old his shoes fit me) and you only lift your foot 1/4th an inch to move. kids who are speeding thru malls, etc are acting crazy, but these are the same kids who were running thru malls etc before heelies came out. DS wears his when we are in malls and BJ/Costco type stores, but he never goes more than a foot in front of us and glides - doesn't zoom. He also is not allowed to do it if people are around and is very careful to not run in front of anyone. He has had them since December and we have never had anyone even comment on his wearing them.

Parents who allow their kids to misbehave with Heelies on will allow them to misbehave with bare feet or sneakers too. If you have kids you need to be their parent, not their friend. Everytime DS or DD want something and I say no they give me the "I hate you", I laugh and say "thank you that means Im doing something right."

My friend allows her kids to do what they want when they want and it bothers me, but they know in my house there are rules and when they are here they are very good. Manners and respect has been burned into my kids heads since the moment they were born.

i don't even let mine wear them to the store or to the mall. and, in fact, the novelty (for my kids anyway) wore off rather quickly.

many stores around my area have signs posted specifically prohibiting them. they don't want the liability, and i don't blame them...

My grandaughter (8) got a pair for Christmas and I swear she is absolutely addicted to them.......She would wear them to bed I do believe if allowed.

I am going on this cruise (my first) to relax and have fun.......I have three grandchildren and spend a lot of time with them and love them dearly......I can't stand most of the modern parenting that lets kids (express themselves) be bratty! I certainly hope I don't have to deal with alot of that. It's not that I can't stand kids because I love them...but like the heeley's the cruise I have in mind doesn't include putting up with kids that are let go!.....I have looked forward to this (girls outting) for a long time and sure hope I don't have to put up with that. I am firm with my grandkids and I love them...so don't expect me to have a lot of pateince with kids that I don't even know.....arggggghhhh......I know sometimes kids just don't listen but if the parents are at least trying to make them mind I stay out of it. If a parent doesn't step up and say something I will put a kid in his place quick! ;)

i think you'll be quite safe on your cruise. there shld be a lot less kids than normal on it. it's right after the holiday winter break, most will be due back to school. and, the little ones that go w/ mom and dad during that time, don't know how to Heely yet.:D
