Tip person that escorts to cabin on arrival?

We took our first X cruise in Feb & are booked for another next Feb. Just wondering about tipping the crew member that greets you, hands you champagne and then shows you to your cabin. He also wheeled my carry-on. I assume(d) a dollar tip was okay but he seemed surprised. Was it not enough or do they normally not get tipped?

We always board very early, so usually our cabin hasn't been available. This issue has been discussed on our board previously, and has mixed opinions.

There was no escort to show us to our cabin, so didn't have to worry about tipping them. Actually the champagne was even set up on tables, nobody did anything for us. There was a mass of people trying to get on the elevators and milling around. It was actually kind of chaotic. Finally found a stairway to get to the buffet area for food. Then about 1:00 the announcement was made that the cabins were ready, we found the cabin on our own. I didn't see anything that Celebrity did any better than Carnival, NCL, RCCL, or HAL in the embarkation process.

We have always been greeted with Champagne and escorted to our cabin. We normally tip $1 per bag. It is a nice service although I'm sure we could manage to find our cabin on our own and could easily transport our carry-ons. I'm not sure what time this service begins. Maybe is someone boarded early, Celebrity was not set up with Champagne and escorts.

Never have I had that experience.

I always tend to board early, so I'm greeted with champagne and such, but the cabins are not ready so I go to the pool deck to wait. I've never been 'on time' and escorted. Nice idea though. I think I'd tip if I had bags. Or at least get his name and track him down later.

We were on time for our recent embarkation and were greeted with champagne and an escort, although the champagne trays were placed on tables, and not personally offered to the arriving guests. Not that it mattered, we were just so excited to be on the ship. It was definitely nice not to have to search for your cabin on your own, although I thought it was funny how our escort was a bit confused as well (I think he may be a waiter so was not used to the cabin layout?). So we all searched together! :D

BTW, if the escort does not handle any bags for you, would you still tip?

Only on my first cruise did a very nice young man take everything off our hands & bring us right to our cabin. I think I tipped him a five cuz that's what I had & he said, "God bless you" & that was the start of a wonderful cruise. It was such a nice touch but I haven't had that option since. Meg

I have always tipped at least a couple of dollars. Every time I have been escorted to my cabin, they have always insisted on carrying at least one of my bags. On one occasion, I tipped the guy $20. I had WAY overdone on the carry on luggage and it was clearly very awkward for me to handle (the bags were unevenly weighted with bottles of wine and such and kept falling off my rollaboard). The very nice man who escorted me relieved me of ALL of my bags including the one I was carrying for my husband (long story). Pretty impressive since I had one of the aft cabins, so it was a long walk for both of us! Yes, I overtipped, but you cannot imagine what a nice start to the cruise it was, especially since the reason for the mess was my own stupidity.

it all depends on the how much luggage you have and the service. It also depends on the cruise line, what cabin you are in,etc. But i usually tip between $5 - $10. i personally think anything below $5 is too low.

If you dont want the escort, because you dont want to tip, i would respectfully decline the escort. Which i do sometimes when i am in hotels.

If they're not going to help me with my bags, I don't really need an escort so I'd decline, or if they insisted on walking with me, I wouldn't tip.

Someone grabs a bag, they get a few bucks. I'm always appreciative of help.
