A 35-year-old tourist from Canada has drowned while snorkeling off the west coast of Barbados.

Barbados police say a Ontario man with the last name of Van Ashley drowned Tuesday while snorkeling off a small boat with his wife and a few others. A spokesman for the Royal Barbados Police Force refused to provide Van Ashley's first name.

Van Ashley was visiting the Caribbean island as a passenger of the Norwegian Pearl cruise ship.

He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police were taking statements from others aboard the small boat as part of an investigation.

My heart goes out to his family.

Does anyone know about the woman who drowned off Carlisle Beach Barbados on March 1st 2013. We were sitting on the beach when a small catamaran pulled up with a woman that they found floating in the water. Someone said that she was from a cruise ship that was in port.
