kkorman Posted August 7, 2004 #1 Share Posted August 7, 2004 Is there anything adventurous to do here? Hiking? I know there is the repelling, but I have 2 long days here next month and was just there 2 months ago. Any suggestions?
Yukon Posted August 7, 2004 #2 Share Posted August 7, 2004 The Skagway area offers superb hiking, both guided and unguided. For the unguided ones, you can pick up a trail brochure at the NPS center, or rent a car and head north till you're above treeline and see a likely spot to head for. There's a guided hike that combines a helicopter access with a ride back down on the railroad. The guided hike that goes the furthest afield and offers both a mild and strenuous version of the hike is http://www.yukonhikes.com/ Murray

sarahjane Posted August 9, 2004 #4 Share Posted August 9, 2004 We had a great time on 2 different "adventurous" excursions in Skagway. In the morning we took the White Pass train up and went kayaking on Bernard Lake. It was beautiful and fun. We did get a little wet and the kayaking was for about an hour. Rode a bus/van back down. Then in the late afternoon we did the "Hike & Float the Chilkoot Trail" excursion. It was a van ride to the Chilkoot trail, then a 2 mile hike - lots of steep ups & downs - strenuous enough to call it exercise. Then a float back down on a big rubber raft on the Tayia river. No whitewater, but still fun! Both these excursions will get your heart & lungs pumping, but not totally knock you out (unless you're a real mess!). We ranged in age from 17 to 48. Have fun! sarahjane

fajitapita Posted August 10, 2004 #6 Share Posted August 10, 2004 My DH and I just got back yesterday from our cruise and really enjoyed our horseback riding excursion with Southeast Tours. A van takes you over WhitePass and into the Yukon near Emerald Lake where you go riding on some very nice trails for about 1 1/2 hours. I hadn't been on a horse in 27 years, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Here are the 2 sites... http://www.yukonhorses.com/default.htm http://southeasttours.com/03_skagway_yukon_horseback.html
